How Much Does Scale Calibration Cost? Prices by Capacity (In-House, NIST and On-Site)
Short answer: at MNM Scales, calibrating a small balance or scale (up to 2.2 kg) costs $95 with an in-house certificate or $395 with a NIST-traceable certificate. Balances from 2.2 to 6.2 kg cost $195 or $495, and larger scales are priced by capacity (see the table below). Mail-in calibration is available nationwide and usually takes 1 to 3 business days. On-site service across the Houston area is a $295 service call plus $2 per mile round trip, and our technicians bring their own test weights.
Calibration pricing in the scale industry is often a mystery until a technician shows up. We’d rather you know what you’ll pay before you ship a balance or book a visit. Here’s how we price calibration, what changes the cost, and how to pick the right certificate for your business.
MNM Scales calibration prices by capacity
The tier depends on your scale’s maximum capacity. For dual-range or multi-range models, use the highest range. For pound-rated scales, use the kilogram equivalent. A capacity that falls exactly on a limit stays in the lower tier.
| Maximum capacity | Typical equipment | In-house calibration with certificate (NIST-tested weights) | NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 2.2 kg (about 5 lb) | Milligram and analytical balances, jewelry and reloading scales, 5 lb scales | $95 (add to cart) | $395 (add to cart) |
| Over 2.2 kg to 6.2 kg | 3 to 6 kg precision balances (e.g. A&D GX-4002A, GF-3002A) | $195 (add to cart) | $495 (add to cart) |
| Over 6.2 kg to 35 kg | Bench, food, counting and shipping scales | $250 (add to cart) | $595 (add to cart) |
| Over 35 kg to 150 kg | Larger bench and shipping scales, 300 lb platforms | $350 (add to cart) | $750 (add to cart) |
| Over 150 kg | Floor scales, large platforms, crane scales | $495 (add to cart) | $995 (add to cart) |
Examples: a 320 g A&D FX-323N or 1,200 g A&D EK-1200i is in the first tier ($95 / $395). A 4,200 g A&D GX-4002A is in the second tier ($195 / $495). A 6.5 kg balance moves up to the 6.2 to 35 kg tier. A 300 lb (136 kg) shipping scale falls in the 35 to 150 kg tier, and a 500 lb (227 kg) scale is in the over-150 kg tier.
In-house certificate or NIST-traceable certificate?
Both options include a calibration certificate. The difference is the level of documentation.
- In-house calibration with certificate ($95 and up): our technicians calibrate and verify the scale with NIST-tested weights and issue our calibration certificate. It’s the right choice for most businesses, reloaders, hobbyists and anyone who wants to know the scale is accurate and have a record of it.
- NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate ($395 and up): full calibration documented on a NIST-traceable certificate. Choose it when an auditor, a quality system, a state program or a customer contract asks for NIST traceability. Pharmacies, dispensaries, labs and manufacturers with QC programs typically fall here.
Not sure which one your inspector or auditor expects? Send us the requirement and we’ll match the certificate to it.
What else affects the cost
- Where the work happens. In-shop and mail-in calibration are priced by the table above. On-site visits across the Houston area and suburbs add a $295 service call plus $2 per mile round trip. Our technicians bring their own test weights, so you don’t need to supply any. For example, a site 25 miles from our shop is 50 miles round trip, or $100 in mileage. Dallas, Austin and San Antonio visits are available on request. See on-site scale calibration in Houston for what a visit covers.
- Urgency. Same-day and emergency calls depend on technician availability and are quoted per call. If a line is down, call us first.
- Legal-for-trade work. NTEP scales used to sell by weight must be calibrated and sealed by an authorized service agency. MNM Scales is TDA licensed with registered technicians, and we can place devices in service in Texas.
- Repairs and parts. If a scale can’t hold calibration because of a damaged load cell, cable or indicator, we’ll quote the repair before doing it. We carry replacement load cells, indicators, cables and power supplies.
- Several scales at once. Labs, warehouses and multi-location businesses can ask for a combined quote and a recurring calibration schedule.
Mail-in calibration: how it works
- Add the matching calibration tier to your cart, or contact us to book an on-site visit instead (the usual choice for floor and crane scales).
- Pack the scale securely, in the original box if you still have it, and include your contact details and any certificate requirements.
- We calibrate it in our Texas shop, usually within 1 to 3 business days, and issue your certificate.
- We ship it back to you. Mail-in TDA and NIST calibration is available nationwide.
Buying a new scale? Add calibration to the same order and the scale ships calibrated, with the certificate in the box, so it’s ready to use or inspect the day it arrives.
How often you’ll pay for calibration
Manufacturers such as A&D recommend calibrating when a scale is installed, after it’s moved, when the environment changes, and periodically after that. Many businesses budget for certified calibration at least once a year. Pharmacies, labs and legal-for-trade users often calibrate more frequently, or on the schedule their auditor or state inspector sets. Between certified calibrations, a quick check with a certified test weight catches problems early. For lab balances, see our step-by-step FX-120i calibration guide.
Why businesses choose MNM Scales for calibration
MNM Scales has been in business for over 30 years. We’re one of the largest scale distributors in the country and an authorized dealer for the brands we sell. Customers tell us they value prices posted upfront, a real person who answers the phone (even late, when a part has to go out overnight), fast turnaround from our Texas shop, and one company that sells the scale, calibrates it and repairs it. Need a scale while yours is in the shop? We offer scale rentals too. See all our scale services.

Frequently asked questions
How much does scale calibration cost?
At MNM Scales it depends on maximum capacity: $95 (in-house certificate) or $395 (NIST-traceable certificate) up to 2.2 kg, $195 or $495 from 2.2 to 6.2 kg, $250 or $595 up to 35 kg, $350 or $750 up to 150 kg, and $495 or $995 above 150 kg.
How much does on-site scale calibration cost in Houston?
On-site service across the Houston area and suburbs is a $295 service call plus $2 per mile round trip, and our technicians bring their own test weights. Same-day and emergency visits depend on availability. Dallas, Austin and San Antonio are available on request.
How long does mail-in calibration take?
Usually 1 to 3 business days in our shop, plus shipping both ways. Mail-in TDA and NIST calibration is available nationwide.
What’s the difference between the $95 and $395 calibration?
Both include a certificate. The $95 in-house calibration uses NIST-tested weights and our calibration certificate. The $395 NIST calibration includes a NIST-traceable certificate for audits, quality systems and regulated work.
Can you calibrate and seal a legal-for-trade scale?
Yes. MNM Scales is TDA licensed with registered technicians who calibrate and seal NTEP legal-for-trade scales and can place devices in service in Texas.
Can I add calibration when I buy a new scale?
Yes. Add the matching calibration tier to your order and the scale ships calibrated with its certificate.
