What to look for in a gold scale

When you buy or sell gold, silver, gemstones or cannabis by weight, the scale must be NTEP approved for that use. Check three things on the product page:

• Accuracy class. Class II is the class for precious metals and gemstones. Class III suits larger, coarser weighing.
• Certified division (e). The SJX1502N/E reads 0.01 g and is certified at e = 0.1 g, while the SJX323N/E is certified at e = 0.01 g.
• Units. Scout SJX/E models weigh in carats, pennyweight, troy ounces and grains, the units your customers expect.

Choosing the right OHAUS gold scale

Jewelry and gold buying counters

The SJX1502N/E is the go-to Class II scale for scrap gold, chains and rings up to 1,500 g. For diamonds and loose stones, the SJX323N/E gives a finer 0.01 g certified division.

Coin, bullion and silver

Silver and coin dealers often weigh larger lots. The SJX6201N/E handles up to 6,200 g, and the Valor 4000 bench scales handle boxes and bags.

Cannabis dispensaries

Calibration and Texas placed-in-service

Every scale on this page can ship calibrated from our Cypress, TX shop. Calibration is priced by the scale’s maximum capacity:

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

The SJX1502N/E falls in the up to 2.2 kg tier, and the SJX6201N/E falls in the 2.2–6.2 kg tier. Calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after we receive the scale, and our mail-in scale calibration service covers scales bought anywhere. In Texas, a commercial scale must be placed into service and registered with the Texas Department of Agriculture. Our technicians calibrate, repair and certify gold and jewelry scales on-site across the Houston area and surrounding suburbs, with Dallas, Austin and San Antonio on request.
