How to choose a livestock or vet scale

• Animal size. Cats, puppies and newborn animals fit a 44 lb tray scale. Dogs and small livestock need a walk-on platform of 500 lb to 1,000 lb. Cattle and groups of animals need a floor scale or a livestock kit under a chute or cage.
• Platform size. The animal has to stand fully on the platform. A 43 x 20 in deck fits most large dogs, and a 22 x 36 in deck fits goats, sheep and calves.
• Animal hold. Livestock rarely stands still, so look for an indicator with an animal weighing or hold function that averages a moving load.
• Power and portability. A portable scale with a separate indicator moves easily between pens, barns and exam rooms.

Choosing the right animal scale

Veterinary clinics and kennels

Calibration and service

Animal and livestock scales can be calibrated in our Cypress, TX shop or on-site. Calibration is priced by maximum capacity:

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

The 44 lb tray scales fall in the 6.2–35 kg tier, and every 500 lb, 660 lb and 1,000 lb platform falls in the top tier. Shop calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after we receive the scale. MNM Scales is TDA licensed with registered technicians for all scale classes, and we handle the RWM-780 and RWM-700 paperwork when a scale used for sales is placed in service in Texas.

Our technicians calibrate and repair scales on-site across the Houston area and surrounding suburbs, with Dallas, Austin and San Antonio on request. Do I need an NTEP scale to sell livestock?
