A&D FX-300iN Replacement: FX-300iN vs FX-323N (What Changed and Which to Buy)

Short answer: A&D has discontinued the FX-300iN. Its direct replacement is the A&D FX-323N Fortis. It has the same 320 g × 0.001 g capacity, the same NTEP Class II legal-for-trade rating (e = 0.01 g) and the same footprint, and adds a backlit LCD, built-in USB and impact-shock protection. When you buy the FX-323N from MNM Scales, it ships free with a bonus 100 g test weight that we test in our Texas shop.

For more than a decade, the A&D FX-300iN was the go-to 320-gram, milligram-reading NTEP balance for dispensaries, jewelers, pharmacies and QC labs. It was fast, compact and legal for trade, and its price was reasonable for a Class II balance. A&D has now discontinued the FX-300iN and replaced it with a model on its new Fortis platform. If you’re replacing a worn-out FX-300iN, adding another station, or a purchase order still says “FX-300iN”, the model to order is the FX-323N.

This guide covers what stayed the same, what changed, which Fortis model fits your application, and how to keep your current FX-300iN accurate and certified for as long as you keep using it. Still deciding between the general-purpose and NTEP FX-i models? See our FX-120i vs FX-120iN vs FX-300i comparison.

FX-300iN vs FX-323N: side-by-side specifications

All figures come from A&D’s published specifications for the FX-i/FX-iN series and the Fortis FX/FZ series. For FX-300iN owners, the full reference specs remain on our A&D FX-300iN page.

What stays the same

The parts of the FX-300iN that mattered most carry over to the FX-323N. Both balances use A&D’s Compact Super Hybrid Sensor, so you keep the roughly one-second stabilization that makes the FX series quick at a busy counter. Capacity, readability, repeatability and linearity are identical. The NTEP Class II rating and the certified division (e = 0.01 g) are also the same, so you can price and sell by weight at the same resolution as before. The footprint is identical down to the millimeter (193 × 262.5 mm), so the new balance fits the same spot on the counter, in the same glove box or under the same hood.

You also keep the choice of how the trade display works. In e = 10d mode, the balance shows 0.001 g and marks the last digit as non-certified, which suits customers who want to see the extra digit. In e = d mode, it reads directly in 0.01 g. Many dispensaries and jewelers prefer e = d because the number on the display is the number they can legally charge for.

What’s new on the FX-323N

  • USB comes standard. On the FX-300iN, USB meant adding the optional FXi-02 board. The FX-323N has RS-232C and USB built in. In Quick USB mode it types readings straight into Excel, a spreadsheet or a web form with no driver, and in Virtual COM mode it supports two-way communication. Ethernet (FXi-08) and Bluetooth (GXA-27) are available as options.
  • Impact Shock Detection (ISD). When someone drops a heavy item on the pan, the balance sounds an alert. It also logs up to 50 hard impacts so you can see whether the sensor has been abused. In a high-volume store or a shared lab, this is the feature most likely to protect your investment.
  • Backlit LCD. The FX-300iN’s VFD display is replaced by a reverse-backlit white LCD with 16 mm digits that’s easy to read from across a counter.
  • More modes and controls. The FX-323N adds a comparator with a buzzer for check weighing, an animal (average and hold) mode for moving samples, statistical calculation, a density mode (with the optional AD-1654 kit), a user-programmable unit and password-protected user access control.
  • Same calibration weights. Both balances accept 50, 100, 200 or 300 g weights, so the weight you calibrate your FX-300iN with also works on the FX-323N.

Which Fortis model is right for you?

The FX-323N is the direct replacement, but some FX-300iN buyers never needed legal-for-trade approval, and others need a smaller or washdown model. Use this table to pick (for jewelry and gold counters, see also our legal for trade jewelry scale guide):

Your applicationBest fitWhy

Reloading powder and bulletsFX-123 or FX-323Reads in grains. Pick the FX-323 to weigh heavier cases and components

A practical tip: if your FX-300iN was only ever used for formulation, QC or reloading and was never sealed or inspected for trade, the non-NTEP FX-323 gives you the same sensor and performance for non-trade work. If customers pay based on the reading, or an inspector has ever put a seal on your balance, stay with the FX-323N.

Switching from the FX-300iN: what carries over

  • Calibration weight: 100 g is one of A&D’s listed calibration values for both models. Every FX-323N from MNM Scales comes with a bonus 100 g test weight that we test in Texas, so you’re ready to check and calibrate on day one. Extra weights are available as the A&D 100 g calibration weight (sold separately).
  • Ethernet: the A&D FXi-08 Ethernet interface is listed as an option for both series. Install it before the balance is sealed for trade.
  • Carrying case: the A&D FXi-15 carrying case is listed for the Fortis 0.001 g and 0.01 g models as well as the FX-i series.
  • USB: the FX-323N has USB built in. You no longer need the FXi-02 board.
  • Printer and POS connections: both balances have an RS-232C (D-Sub 9-pin) port. If your FX-300iN feeds a label printer, POS terminal or LIMS, call us before you swap. We’ll confirm the cable and settings so your counter keeps running on day one.

Legal for trade: placing your new balance in service

NTEP approval is what makes a balance eligible for commercial use. Many states also want commercial devices registered, inspected and sealed once they’re installed. In Texas, a licensed service company places commercial devices into service and files the placed-in-service report with the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). MNM Scales is TDA licensed, and our registered technicians can calibrate your FX-323N before it ships, so it arrives ready for inspection. Outside Texas, ask your state’s weights and measures office about its placed-in-service process. Our TDA and NIST mail-in calibration is available nationwide and usually takes 1 to 3 business days.

Calibration for your FX-323N or your current FX-300iN

Both balances weigh up to 320 g, so they fall in our up-to-2.2 kg calibration tier. Add calibration to your FX-323N order and the balance ships calibrated, with a certificate. Already own an FX-300iN? We’ll calibrate and certify it by mail-in (available nationwide, usually 1 to 3 business days) or in our Houston-area shop, so you can keep using it with full documentation.

  • In-house calibration with certificate (NIST-tested weights): $95. Add $95 calibration to cart
  • NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate: $395. For pharmacies, dispensaries, labs and audits that need a full paper trail. Add $395 NIST calibration to cart
  • On-site service across the Houston area and suburbs: $295 service call plus $2 per mile round trip. Same-day and emergency visits depend on availability, so call us. Service in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio is available on request. See our scale services

Will my FX-300iN accessories work with the FX-323N?

A&D lists the FXi-08 Ethernet interface, the FXi-09 rechargeable battery and the FXi-15 carrying case as options for the Fortis series, and a 100 g calibration weight works on both models. USB is built into the FX-323N. For printer, POS or software connections, call us and we’ll confirm the setup.

What is the difference between the FX-323 and the FX-323N?

Both use the same 320 g × 0.001 g Fortis sensor. The FX-323N adds NTEP legal-for-trade approval for selling by weight. The FX-323 is built for lab, pharmacy compounding, QC and reloading work.

Can you still calibrate my FX-300iN?

Yes. We calibrate FX-300iN balances by mail-in (available nationwide, usually 1 to 3 business days) or in our Houston-area shop. On-site service is available across Houston and the surrounding area.

What calibration weight does the FX-323N use?

A&D lists 50 g, 100 g, 200 g and 300 g weights for external calibration of the 320 g Fortis models. Every FX-323N from MNM Scales comes with a bonus 100 g test weight that we test in Texas.
