Crane Scale Repair: Troubleshooting by Symptom and When to Repair or Replace

Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated November 1, 2026 · Prices checked November 1, 2026

Short answer: Most crane scale repairs come down to five areas: the battery and charger, the load cell and its cable, the display and keypad, the remote, and the hook, shackle and housing. Charge the battery with the correct charger and test with a known weight first. A crane scale that still will not power up, zero or read true needs a technician, and any bent hook, worn shackle or cracked housing means the scale comes out of service until it is inspected. MNM Scales repairs the crane and hanging scales we carry in our Cypress shop or on-site across Greater Houston; the on-site service call is $295 + $2 per mile, and repairs are quoted per job.

Crane and hanging scales take shock loads, swinging loads and constant charging, so they need repair more often than a bench scale. MNM Scales has sold, calibrated and repaired scales for over 30 years from our shop in Cypress, Texas. This guide matches each crane scale symptom to its likely cause and first check, explains what a crane scale repair covers, and shows when replacing the scale is the better call.

What a crane scale repair covers

  • Power: rechargeable batteries, chargers, charge ports and power switches. We stock scale batteries and power supplies.
  • Weighing: load cell diagnosis and replacement, cables and connectors, and replacement load cells for wired S-type crane scale kits.
  • Display and controls: display boards, keypads, remotes and settings.
  • Recalibration: on-site, our technicians bring their own test weights, so the crane scale is recalibrated after the repair. Add a certificate through industrial scale calibration.

See the crane scale repair service for how drop-off and on-site repairs work. Need a crane scale while yours is in the shop? See crane scale rental in Houston.

Repair or replace a crane scale?

Repair it whenConsider replacing it when
The hook, shackle, eye and housing are soundThe load path (hook, eye, housing or load cell body) is bent or cracked
The fault is the battery, charger, remote, display, keypad or a cableThe repair quote comes close to the price of a new scale of the same capacity
The scale’s capacity and division still fit your liftsYou now lift heavier loads or need a finer division
You want to keep a matched set or a familiar model in serviceYou want features the old scale lacks, such as a remote or a brighter display
We quote the repair and a replacement side by side so you can compare.

If you replace it, our crane scale buying guide covers capacity, division size, display and rigging.

How to prevent repeat crane scale repairs

  • Stay under the rated capacity and lower loads smoothly; shock loads and dropped loads strain the load cell.
  • Lift straight up. Side pulls stress the hook, eye and load cell.
  • Charge the battery as the manual describes and store the scale dry.
  • Inspect the hook, latch and shackle before each use as part of your rigging inspection program.
  • Check the scale with a known weight between calibrations; see crane scale calibration for intervals.

How crane scale repair works at MNM Scales

  1. Send the details: brand, model, capacity and what the scale is doing. A photo of the display or error code helps.
  2. Get a quote: we confirm the repair, the parts and the timing, and can quote a replacement next to it.
  3. We repair it: in our Cypress shop, or on-site anywhere in Greater Houston (service call $295 + $2 per mile, round trip, with the repair quoted on top). Outside Houston, ask about mail-in service.
  4. Recalibrate and certify: the scale goes back to work checked with test weights, with a certificate if you need one.

A crane scale down on a job? Call (832) 290-3120; we answer 24/7 and confirm same-day availability in the Houston area.

Using a crane scale for trade in Texas: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. TDA explains this in Legal for Trade Scales in the State of Texas (PDF). See our NTEP guide and TDA scale certification guide.

Crane scale down? Tell us the brand, model, capacity and symptom, and we will quote the repair, the recalibration and, if it makes sense, a replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Can a crane scale be repaired?

Yes. Batteries, chargers, remotes, display boards, keypads, cables and load cells can be repaired or replaced. A bent hook or cracked load path means the scale is inspected before deciding between repair and replacement.

Why won’t my crane scale turn on?

Start with the battery and charger: charge fully with the charger made for the scale and check the charge port. If it still will not power up or hold a charge, the battery, charger or power board needs a technician.

Why does my crane scale drift or not zero?

Drift and zero problems usually point to load cell strain from a shock load or overload, or moisture in a cable or connector. Zero with the hook hanging free; if the reading still moves with no load, have it checked.

Is it worth repairing a crane scale?

It is when the frame and load path are sound and the fault is the battery, charger, remote, display or a cable. When the repair quote approaches the price of a new scale, or you need a different capacity, replacing it can make more sense. We quote both.

Do you repair crane scales on-site?

Yes, across Greater Houston. The service call is $295 + $2 per mile, round trip, with the repair quoted on top, and our technicians bring test weights to recalibrate after the repair.

Does a crane scale need calibration after a repair?

Yes. Any repair to the load cell, cable or electronics changes how the scale reads, so it is recalibrated with test weights before it goes back into service.

What do you need for a crane scale repair quote?

The brand, model, capacity and what the scale is doing, plus a photo of the display or error code if there is one.
