Wheelchair Scale Buying Guide: Ramp, Platform and Chair Scales for Care Facilities
Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated November 2, 2026 · Prices checked November 2, 2026
Short answer: a wheelchair scale weighs a person while they stay seated in their own wheelchair. The chair rolls up a ramp onto a low platform, and Tare subtracts the weight of the chair so the display shows the person. For bariatric capacity, the Brecknell MS-1000 weighs up to 1,000 lb in 0.5 lb steps, with ramps on both ends and a handrail, at $1,299 (regular $1,495). For people who can move from the wheelchair onto a seat, the Brecknell CS-200M chair scale is $546.99. Call (832) 290-3120 and tell us who you weigh and where.
This guide is for clinics, dialysis centers, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and assisted living facilities choosing a scale for residents and patients who use a wheelchair. MNM Scales has sold, calibrated and repaired scales for over 30 years from our shop in Cypress, Texas. For physician scales, baby scales and the rest of our healthcare line, see the medical scales we stock.
How to choose a wheelchair scale
- Decide how people get weighed. If they stay in the wheelchair, choose a ramp or platform scale. If they can move onto a seat with help, a chair scale also works.
- Size the capacity. The deck carries the person and the chair together, so add the heaviest person you expect to the weight of the heaviest chair. Bariatric programs usually start at 1,000 lb.
- Check the ramps and deck. A low deck with gentle ramps lets a chair roll on and off. Ramps on both ends let the chair roll straight through instead of backing off.
- Use Tare for the chair. Tare subtracts the wheelchair, so staff read the person’s weight directly.
- Look for Hold. Hold keeps the reading on the display after the chair rolls off, so staff can record it.
- Plan where it lives. Handles and wheels let one scale serve several rooms or units. A scale that stays in one room can be parked against a wall.
- Buy it calibrated. Order calibration with a certificate so the scale arrives ready for use.
Ramp, platform or chair scale: which wheelchair scale fits
Ramp and platform wheelchair scales
A platform wheelchair scale has a low steel deck with ramps. The Brecknell MS-1000 has built-in 9 degree ramps on both ends, a guard rail for stability, four planar beam load cells, and Zero, Tare, Hold and lb or kg unit keys. Its indicator mounts on a desk or a pole. The MNM Scales Physician Medical Wheelchair Scale also weighs 1,000 lb in 0.5 lb steps and has an LED display; call us for its deck and ramp details.
Chair scales
A chair scale weighs a person seated on the scale itself. The Brecknell CS-200M is a mechanical beam chair scale that weighs 440 lb in 4 oz steps and needs no power. Its armrests lift away for side transfers, it has a footrest, and it rolls on locking rear wheels and swivel front wheels.
| Type | Who it suits | What to look for | In stock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ramp or platform wheelchair scale | People who stay seated in their own wheelchair | Low deck, ramps on both ends, Tare and Hold, 1,000 lb for bariatric use | Brecknell MS-1000, MNM Scales wheelchair scale |
| Chair scale | People who can move onto a seat with help | Lift-away armrests, footrest, locking wheels | Brecknell CS-200M |
| Several units or floors | Facilities that want a scale on every unit | Identical scales so every unit weighs the same way | Brecknell MS-1000 3-Pack |
Bariatric capacity and the weight of the wheelchair
The capacity has to cover the person and the chair together. For example, a 400 lb person in a 60 lb wheelchair puts 460 lb on the deck, and a heavy-duty bariatric chair adds more. A 1,000 lb wheelchair scale such as the MS-1000 leaves room for bariatric patients and heavier chairs. The CS-200M chair scale weighs up to 440 lb, and the person sits on the scale’s own seat, so no wheelchair weight is involved.
Using Tare and Hold on a wheelchair scale
- Zero the empty scale before the first weighing.
- Roll the empty wheelchair onto the deck and press Tare. The display returns to zero with the chair on it.
- Roll the chair off, help the person into it, and roll back onto the deck. The display now shows the person’s weight.
- Press Hold if the reading needs to stay on the display while the chair rolls off and staff record it.
- If the same chair is weighed again later, weigh it empty again first, since cushions, bags and footrests change its weight.
Moving a wheelchair scale between rooms
The MS-1000 has two handles and wheels so one person can move it between rooms and units. The CS-200M weighs 70 lb and rolls on its own wheels; lock the rear wheels before a person sits down or stands up. After moving any scale, set it on a level, solid floor and zero it before weighing.

Setup tips and common mistakes
- Level floor: set the deck on a level, solid floor so all four load cells share the load.
- Clear approach: keep both ramps clear so the chair can roll on straight and centered.
- Zero first: check that the display reads zero before each person is weighed.
- Whole chair on the deck: make sure all wheels and footrests are on the deck, not resting on a ramp or the floor.
- Re-tare for each chair: tare the actual chair being used each time, rather than reusing an older chair weight.
- Power: keep the AC adapter or batteries ready for electronic scales; the CS-200M is mechanical and needs no power.
Rules: wheelchair scales in Texas
Wheelchair and chair scales in clinics and care facilities weigh people for their records. TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. Any scale used to buy or sell by weight has to be legal for trade, and we recommend NTEP models for that use. Our TDA-registered technicians can check your use; see our NTEP guide and our TDA scale certification guide.
