NTEP Bench Scales

NTEP bench scales are approved for legal-for-trade use, so you can sell by weight, charge by weight and pass state inspection with confidence. MNM Scales stocks NTEP certified bench scales from A&D, OHAUS, Brecknell, CAS, Doran, Rice Lake, Torrey, Optima, Mettler Toledo and MNM Scales, from 1.5 kg portion scales to 1,000 lb stainless platforms. Every scale ships free, and our TDA licensed technicians can place your scale into service in Texas.

What NTEP means for a bench scale

NTEP (the National Type Evaluation Program) evaluates a scale design against NIST Handbook 44. An approved model carries a Certificate of Conformance (CC), an accuracy class and a verification interval. Most commercial bench scales are NTEP Class III, the class for weighing goods sold by weight such as food, produce, bulk goods and shipping. For gemstones, precious metals and high-precision trade weighing, see Class II balances in our NTEP legal-for-trade scales. Learn more in what NTEP and legal for trade mean.

Choosing an NTEP bench scale

Match the verification interval to your product

The NTEP verification interval (e) is the step that counts for trade. Pick a scale whose legal-for-trade increment suits your smallest sale: 0.01 lb for deli and candy, 0.02–0.05 lb for produce and parcels, 0.1–0.2 lb for heavy cartons and bulk goods.

Capacity and platform

Choose capacity above your heaviest item and a platform large enough for it to sit fully on the pan. Compact 6–15 kg scales suit counters; 12 x 14 in to 24 x 24 in platforms suit cartons, totes and bulk goods.

Washdown

For meat, seafood and food production, choose an NTEP washdown model in stainless steel, such as the Optima OP-915W-SS 24 x 24 in washdown bench scale, 1,000 x 0.1 lb. Browse all washdown scales.

Printing and price computing

Retail counters that print labels or compute prices need a legal-for-trade price computing or label printing scale. See price computing scales and label printing scales.

Larger loads

For pallets and drums, step up to NTEP floor scales. For packages, see shipping bench scales; for all sizes, see bench scales.

Placing an NTEP scale into service in Texas

In Texas, a commercial scale must be placed into service and registered with the Texas Department of Agriculture. MNM Scales is TDA licensed with registered technicians for all scale classes, and our technicians handle the RWM-780 and RWM-700 paperwork for you. Read how the RWM-780 placed-in-service process works and TDA scale certification in Texas, or book legal-for-trade scale calibration.

Calibration for NTEP bench scales

Add pre-sale calibration and we calibrate your scale at our Cypress shop before it ships. Mail-in and pre-sale calibration (TDA and NIST) is available for Texas and nationwide in states that accept TDA calibration. Pricing follows the scale’s maximum capacity:

Scale maximum capacity In-house calibration with NIST-tested weights NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate
Up to 2.2 kg (4.85 lb) $95 $395
2.2–6.2 kg (4.85–13.7 lb) $195 $495
6.2–35 kg (13.7–77 lb) $250 $595
35–150 kg (77–330 lb) $350 $750
Over 150 kg (330 lb) $495 $995

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

A 1.5 kg compact NTEP scale such as the OHAUS Valor 4000 falls in the up to 2.2 kg tier. Calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after receipt. On-site service in Houston and the surrounding suburbs is $295 plus $2 per mile round trip, charged once per visit, with calibration priced per scale; Dallas, Austin and San Antonio are available on request with a quote.

NTEP bench scale FAQ

What does NTEP certified mean?

It means the scale model has passed NTEP type evaluation and holds a Certificate of Conformance, so it can be used for legal-for-trade weighing once it is placed into service by a licensed technician.

Which NTEP class do I need for a bench scale?

Class III covers most commercial bench scale use, including food, produce, shipping and bulk goods. Class II covers high-precision trade such as jewelry and precious metals.

Do I need an NTEP scale to sell by weight?

Yes. Whenever weight determines price, the scale must be NTEP approved and placed into service. Our TDA licensed technicians handle this in Texas.

Can you calibrate and certify my NTEP scale before it ships?

Yes. Add in-house or NIST calibration in the matching capacity tier, and we calibrate it before shipping, usually within 1–3 business days.

Are NTEP bench scales more expensive?

NTEP bench scales start under $300, such as the Torrey EQB 50/100, and range up to stainless washdown platforms for food plants.

Do you serve businesses outside Houston?

Yes. We ship NTEP bench scales free nationwide and offer mail-in calibration. On-site service covers Houston and the surrounding suburbs, with Dallas, Austin and San Antonio on request.

Can I order several NTEP scales for multiple locations?

Yes. Contact us 24/7 or call (832) 290-3120 for a wholesale quote.
