How to choose an OHAUS balance

• Readability first. Scout balances read 1 g to 0.001 g. Pioneer and Adventurer go to 0.1 mg, and the PX225D semi-micro reads 0.01 mg.
• Capacity. Analytical models weigh up to about 220 g. Precision toploaders run to 4,200 g and beyond, so pick a capacity above your heaviest sample.
• Calibration style. Pioneer and Adventurer models without /E calibrate with a built-in weight. Models marked /E, and Scout portable balances, calibrate with an external test weight, which lowers the price.
• Trade use. If you sell by weight, pick an NTEP model, marked N or N/E, such as the Adventurer AX1502N/E or AX4202N/E.

Schools and teaching labs

The Scout SPX222 and SPX421 are light, quick and run on AC power or batteries, so they move easily between benches.

Research and QC labs

The Pioneer PX line covers 0.01 g toploaders through 0.1 mg analytical models with internal calibration. Step up to the Adventurer for a touchscreen and more onboard applications.

Jewelry, gold and retail

NTEP models such as the AX1502N/E and the Scout SJX/E gold balances are approved for selling by weight.

Formulation and larger samples

The PX2202 and AX4202N/E handle kilogram samples at 0.01 g, and the Explorer line adds higher capacities for batching.

OHAUS balance calibration and service

Every OHAUS balance on this page can ship calibrated from our Cypress, TX shop. Calibration is priced by maximum capacity:

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

Scout, Pioneer and Adventurer balances up to 2,200 g fall in the first tier, and the 4,200 g AX4202N/E falls in the 2.2–6.2 kg tier. Calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after we receive the balance, and our mail-in scale calibration service covers OHAUS balances bought anywhere. MNM Scales is TDA licensed, with TDA-Registered Technicians for all scale classes, and we handle the RWM-780 and RWM-700 paperwork for trade scales in Texas.

Our technicians also calibrate and repair scales on-site across the Houston area and surrounding suburbs, with Dallas, Austin and San Antonio on request. What is the difference between Scout, Pioneer and Adventurer?

Scout is a portable balance line. Pioneer is a lab balance line with internal calibration on many models. Adventurer adds a touchscreen and more applications.

Models with N or N/E in the part number, such as the AX1502N/E, AX4202N/E and the Scout SJX/E gold balances, are NTEP approved.
