Scale Calibration & Repair in Channelview, Galena Park & Mont Belvieu, TX
Scale calibration and repair in Channelview, Galena Park and Mont Belvieu, TX, along the north bank of the Ship Channel and the I-10 corridor east of Houston. Our TDA-registered technicians calibrate drum, floor, bench and crane scales, intrinsically safe instruments and lab balances at petrochemical plants, tank terminals and marine yards, and repair load cells, cables and indicators from our own stock. Each scale leaves with an in-house or NIST-traceable certificate.
Three Towns Built on Hydrocarbons
Galena Park started as Clinton, on the north bank of the Ship Channel along what is still Clinton Drive. It incorporated on September 21, 1935 and took its new name from an oil company that operated there. Today its waterfront is lined with large refined-products tank terminals that load ships, barges and pipelines.
Upstream, unincorporated Channelview sits where the San Jacinto River meets the channel. A 4,000-acre olefins complex has operated here since 1957, making ethylene, propylene, butadiene and benzene, and barge fleets tie up along the river. Farther east on I-10, Mont Belvieu in Chambers County sits atop the Barbers Hill salt dome, whose caverns hold more than 250 million barrels of underground storage. It is the largest natural gas liquids storage and fractionation hub in the United States.
What Gets Weighed on the North Bank
| Industry | What gets weighed | Scales | Class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Olefins and petrochemicals | Catalysts, additives, drums | Drum, floor | III |
| Tank terminals | Additive dosing, samples | Bench, IS balance | III / II |
| NGL storage and fractionation | Samples, cylinders | Platform, IS bench | III |
| Plant and terminal labs | Samples, standards | Analytical, precision | I / II |
| Barge and marine yards | Rigging, parts, stores | Crane, floor | III |
| Maintenance shops | Load cell rebuilds | Load cells, indicators | III |

Classified areas at terminals and plants call for intrinsically safe instruments such as the A&D EK-3000AEP balance; your safety team sets the area classification and we match a model to it. Tank, hopper and floor scales built on heavy shear beam cells like the GX-1-20K can be rebuilt one cell at a time. Our guide to load cell types explains the differences.
Repairs on Tank, Hopper and Floor Scales
- One failed cell on a multi-cell scale. We test every cell, replace only the failed one and corner-trim the scale.
- Water and corrosion in the junction box after storms or washdowns, the leading cause of drift near the water.
- Lightning and surge damage to indicators and cells. We test, replace and recalibrate.
- Crane scales in marine yards with salt-damaged electronics or shock-loaded cells.
- Lab balances that fail daily checks in terminal labs, cleaned, adjusted and verified.
We follow your site safety, orientation and permit rules; send them with the booking. Repairs are quoted per job, and rentals keep you weighing while a scale is down.
Records for Plants and Terminals
Process plants and terminals generally want a NIST-traceable certificate with as-found and as-left readings for audits and management-of-change files. Any scale that sets a charge by weight must also meet NIST Handbook 44 and be suitable for its use, usually an NTEP-approved model, and be placed into service by a registered technician of a TDA-licensed service company. See legal-for-trade calibration.
Critical process scales are often calibrated every six months or at each turnaround; tank and hopper scales after any cell replacement. On-site calibration is done during the visit, and shop work is usually ready within 1 to 3 business days.
