Scale Indicator Buying Guide: How to Choose a Weight Indicator
Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated October 27, 2026
Short answer: a scale indicator (also called a readout or weight display) powers the load cells, reads their signal and shows the weight. To choose one, match five things: approval (NTEP Class III for legal-for-trade use), load cell input (how many 350 Ω cells it can power and the connector or terminals), display (LCD or LED), housing (stainless steel IP65 for washdown) and outputs (RS-232 or USB to a printer or computer). Our indicators start at $129, and any new indicator needs a calibration with the scale it is connected to.

The indicator is the part of the scale people touch every day, and it is also the part most often replaced: a dropped or water-damaged readout can be swapped while the platform and load cells keep working. MNM Scales has matched indicators to floor, bench, tank and hanging scales for over 30 years, since 1992. Our technicians replace and calibrate indicators for food manufacturers and distributors, seafood businesses, oil and gas companies, steel and metal producers, fastener makers, pharmacies, grocery stores and pawn shops, so the advice below comes from the bench, not a spec sheet.
What a scale indicator does
- Powers the load cells with a steady excitation voltage, usually 5 V DC.
- Reads the signal, a few millivolts that rise with the load, through an A/D converter. Several load cells are combined first in a junction box.
- Shows the weight in the units you choose, with zero, tare, gross/net and often counting, accumulation and hold.
- Stores the calibration: the relation between the signal and a known test weight.
- Sends the data to a printer, remote display or computer through RS-232, USB or other outputs (see how to connect a scale to a computer).
The specs that matter
| Spec | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Approval | NTEP Certificate of Conformance, Class III, 5,000 divisions or more | Required for legal-for-trade (sale by weight) use with an NTEP platform |
| Load cell input | Number of 350 Ω cells it can power (often 4 to 8); 4-wire or 6-wire | A four-cell floor scale needs an indicator that can drive four cells |
| Connector | Round 4-pin or 5-pin plug, or internal terminal strip | Match the plug on your scale cable, or use a terminal-strip model |
| Display | Backlit LCD or bright LED, digit height | LED reads well across a warehouse; LCD saves battery |
| Housing | ABS for dry areas; stainless steel IP65 or better for washdown | Water and cleaning chemicals are a common cause of indicator failure |
| Power | AC adapter, rechargeable battery or AA batteries | Battery models go where there is no outlet |
| Outputs | RS-232, USB, Ethernet, relays or analog | Needed for printers, PCs, PLCs and remote displays |
| Functions | Counting, checkweighing, accumulation, animal hold, peak hold | Pick the indicator for the job, not just the display |

Replacing the indicator on an existing scale
Most indicator swaps are simple if you check three things before ordering:
- The connection. Look at the back of the old indicator. A round plug with 4 or 5 pins needs an indicator with the same plug, or a new cable end. A cable that goes straight into the housing ends on a terminal strip inside.
- The number of load cells. One cable from a junction box is still four load cells to power. Pick an indicator rated for at least that many 350 Ω cells.
- The approval. If the scale is used for selling by weight, the new indicator must be NTEP approved, and the scale needs a calibration and, in Texas, must be placed back in service by TDA-registered technicians.
Then wire it, set the capacity and division, and calibrate it with certified test weights. Our step-by-step guide to calibrating a floor scale shows the procedure, and TDA scale certification in Texas covers the legal-for-trade side.
NTEP: when the indicator has to be approved
For a scale used to sell by weight, every part, the indicator, load cells and platform, needs an NTEP Certificate of Conformance, and the indicator’s divisions must cover the scale’s capacity and division. Class III indicators commonly approve up to 5,000 or 10,000 divisions: a 5,000 lb floor scale at 1 lb divisions uses 5,000d. For in-house weighing such as batching or inventory, a non-NTEP indicator is fine. See what NTEP and legal for trade mean.
Checklist before you order
- A photo of the back of the old indicator, showing the plug or the cable gland.
- The scale capacity and the division you want, for example 5,000 lb by 1 lb.
- The number of load cells and whether the cable is 4-wire or 6-wire.
- Where the scale lives: dry warehouse, washdown room, outdoors or a hazardous area.
- What the weight needs to go to: a printer, a computer, a PLC or a remote display.
- Whether the scale is used for selling by weight (NTEP needed) or in-house only.
Send us that list by phone or through our contact form and we will confirm the indicator, the cable and any adapter before you order.
LCD or LED display?
| Backlit LCD | LED | |
|---|---|---|
| Readability | Sharp in daylight; backlight for dim areas | Very bright, easy to read across a room |
| Power | Low; long battery life | Higher; usually on AC power |
| Best for | Portable and battery scales, outdoor use | Warehouse floors, receiving docks |
Common indicator problems and quick checks
The calls our technicians get most often are not broken indicators at all: someone pressed a key combination or the calibration switch and the indicator went into calibration or setup mode, or a setting such as the units or the division was changed by mistake. Power the indicator off and on before changing anything else. Next come damaged cables and load cells that failed after heavy use. If the display shows a code, see scale error codes explained; if it will not zero or keeps drifting, see our troubleshooting guide for a scale that won’t zero.
- Display blank: check the adapter, battery and power switch.
- Weight drifts or jumps: check the cable and the junction box for moisture or damage.
- Wrong weight: check for debris under the platform, then the calibration.
- Stuck in a setup menu: power-cycle without saving and call us before changing settings.
Calibration after a new indicator
A new indicator has to be calibrated with the scale it is connected to: the calibration is stored in the indicator, so it covers the complete scale. Our technicians calibrate floor scales on-site with their own certified test weights. On-site service in the Houston area is $295 plus $2 per mile, round trip, charged once per visit, with calibration priced per scale (see industrial scale calibration in Houston). Smaller scales can come to us by mail-in calibration. Shop calibration for a complete scale, by its maximum capacity:
| Maximum capacity | In-house calibration with certificate | NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 2.2 kg (about 5 lb) | $95 (add to cart) | $395 (add to cart) |
| Over 2.2 to 6.2 kg | $195 (add to cart) | $495 (add to cart) |
| Over 6.2 to 35 kg (about 14 to 77 lb) | $250 (add to cart) | $595 (add to cart) |
| Over 35 to 150 kg (about 77 to 330 lb) | $350 (add to cart) | $750 (add to cart) |
| Over 150 kg (floor and large platform scales) | $495 (add to cart) | $995 (add to cart) |

Frequently asked questions
What does a scale indicator do?
A scale indicator powers the load cells, reads their millivolt signal, converts it to weight, displays it, stores the calibration and sends data to printers or computers.
How do I choose a scale indicator?
Match the approval (NTEP for legal-for-trade use), the number of load cells and the connector, the display type, the housing (stainless IP65 for washdown) and the outputs you need.
Can I replace just the indicator on my scale?
Yes, if the new indicator matches the connector, can power the number of load cells and has the approval you need. The scale must be calibrated after the swap.
Does a new indicator need calibration?
Yes. The calibration is stored in the indicator, so a new indicator must be calibrated with the scale it is connected to, using certified test weights.
What is an NTEP indicator?
An NTEP indicator has a Certificate of Conformance from the National Type Evaluation Program, so it can be used in a legal-for-trade scale with NTEP load cells or platform.
LCD or LED: which display is better?
LED is very bright and suits warehouses and docks. Backlit LCD uses less power, so it suits battery and portable scales and reads well in daylight.
Which indicator works in washdown areas?
Choose a stainless steel indicator rated IP65 or higher with a sealed keypad, such as the LP7510C-12-2PT or the Optima OP-900B-12.
Why did my indicator go into calibration mode?
Usually a key combination or the calibration switch was pressed by accident. Power the indicator off and on without saving and call us before changing settings.
