Electronic Balance Basics: Resolution, Power and Simple Calibration for Schools and Small Labs

Short answer: an electronic balance is a digital scale that turns force on a load cell into a weight reading on a display. For classrooms and small labs, start with the readability you need, then pick capacity and power (batteries, AC, or both). A pocket starter such as the Brecknell EPB (500 g x 0.01 g or 3,000 g x 0.1 g) is $38. For 2,600 g x 0.1 g on AA or AC, the Adam Core CQT 2601 is $328.99. For 220 g x 0.01 g with a color touchscreen, the OHAUS Scout STX222 is $591.99. Buy it calibrated: call (832) 290-3120.
This guide stays at the starter and education level: how an electronic balance works, how to pick resolution, battery vs AC power, and simple calibration checks. It is not a pharmacy or analytical buying guide. MNM Scales has sold, calibrated and repaired scales for over 30 years from our shop in Cypress, Texas, and we are one of the largest scale distributors.
What an electronic balance is
An electronic balance measures weight with a load cell (or similar sensor), converts that signal to a digital value, and shows it on an LCD or touchscreen. Compared with a mechanical beam or spring scale, you get a clear numeric reading, tare, and often counting or simple unit switching. Schools, makers and small labs use electronic balances for teaching, sample prep and light QC when they do not need analytical 0.1 mg readability.
How to pick resolution and capacity
Resolution (readability) is the smallest step the display shows. Capacity is the maximum the pan can hold. Match readability to the smallest amount that matters in your method, then add the empty container when you size capacity. For teaching and rough prep, 0.1 g is often enough. For finer classroom work and light formulation, 0.01 g is a common step. Leave analytical 0.1 mg work for a dedicated analytical balance, not the starter models here.
| Use | Readability to look for | Capacity to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Pocket checks, crafts, quick demos | 0.01 g to 0.1 g | Under 500 g, or a dual-range pocket model |
| Classroom and general sample prep | 0.1 g | 1 kg to 3 kg with room for a beaker |
| Finer teaching labs and light formulation | 0.01 g | A few hundred grams to about 2 kg |
Battery vs AC power
Pocket balances such as the EPB run on small dry cells (two AAA included on that model). Bench-style portable balances often take AA cells (not included) plus an AC adapter (included). Touchscreen models draw more power, so plan on the adapter for long lab sessions. Batteries and chargers beyond what the listing ships are not included. For field-focused portable picks, see our portable scale buying guide.

Simple calibration checks
Level the balance, warm it up, zero with an empty pan, then place a known weight and confirm the reading. Use clean calibration weights that match the readability you care about. That daily check is not a substitute for sealed or certificate calibration from a TDA-registered technician when your program needs a paper trail.
Rules: NTEP for electronic balances
Classroom demos, recipes and in-house QC are not selling by weight. Selling by weight or printing a net weight for trade is commercial, and the scale has to be legal for trade. The starter models in this guide are not NTEP certified, so call us for a legal-for-trade balance if you sell by weight. Our NTEP guide explains the certificate, and we handle legal-for-trade scale calibration in Texas.
Texas note: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. See TDA’s scales used in trade guidance (PDF) and our TDA scale certification guide, or call us or TDA to confirm your use.
Calibration and rental
- EPB and STX222 calibration add-ons: our TDA-registered technicians calibrate your balance in-house before it ships. Add in-house calibration with a certificate ($95) or NIST calibration with a NIST-traceable certificate ($395). See NIST vs in-house certificates.
- CQT 2601 calibration add-ons: in-house calibration with a certificate ($195) or NIST-traceable calibration ($495).
- Other electronic balances: call for a quote.
- On-site service: $295 + $2 per mile per visit across the Houston area, plus calibration per scale; see on-site calibration and balance calibration in Houston.
- Mail-in, repairs and rentals: use mail-in calibration, have us repair the brands we sell, and rent all types of scales while yours is in for service.
Not sure which electronic balance fits? Tell us the smallest amount you weigh, your heaviest container and whether students will move the balance between rooms. We will match a starter model and can ship it calibrated. Calibration weights and cases are not included unless the listing says so. Shop: 21249 FM 529 Rd, Cypress, TX 77433, visits by appointment.
Frequently asked questions
What is an electronic balance?
A digital balance that uses a load cell (or similar sensor) to show weight on a display, with tare and often simple applications for schools and small labs.
What readability should a starter electronic balance have?
0.1 g covers many classroom and prep jobs; 0.01 g fits finer teaching and light formulation. Analytical 0.1 mg work needs a different class of balance.
Do electronic balances run on batteries?
Many do. The EPB uses two AAA cells. The Adam Core CQT 2601 and OHAUS Scout STX222 take AA cells (not included) or their AC adapters.
Can I sell by weight with these electronic balances?
Not with the models in this guide; they are not NTEP certified. Call us for a legal-for-trade balance if you sell by weight.
Do you calibrate electronic balances?
Yes. In-house calibration with a certificate is $95 for the EPB and STX222 and $195 for the CQT 2601; NIST-traceable is $395 or $495. On-site service is $295 + $2 per mile per visit plus calibration per balance.
