Sartorius Entris II Manual, Explained: BCE224I-1S, BCE223I-1S and BCE1202-1S Setup, isoCAL, Calibration and Error Codes
Short answer: Sartorius publishes two Entris II Essential line manuals: one for the analytical and milligram models such as the BCE224I-1S and BCE223I-1S, and one for the 10 mg precision models such as the BCE1202-1S and BCE2202-1S. The jobs that matter: set up the draft shield and pan (and remove the transport locks on 10 mg models), level it, let it warm up for about 2 hours, calibrate with isoCAL on I models or with the right external weight, and read the warning messages. Download the analytical and milligram manual (PDF) or the precision balance manual (PDF) from Sartorius.

The Entris II Essential line is Sartorius’s BCE family, from the 60 g analytical BCE64 to the 8,200 g BCE8201. An I in the model (BCE224I-1S) means isoCAL internal calibration; -1S is the standard version and -1NUS the U.S. approved version. Every model shares the same touch control panel, menu and applications, so one walkthrough covers the BCE224I-1S, the BCE223I-1S and the BCE1202-1S, with the differences in the table below. Choosing between models or lines? Our Entris II Essential vs Advanced guide covers that.

Setting up an Entris II
What is in the box: the balance, weighing pan, pan support, draft shield, a power supply with country adapters, and the operating instructions. Analytical draft shield models add a dust cover; 10 mg models add four shock absorbers. Calibration weights and data cables are not included.
- Pick the spot. A stable, level bench with little vibration, out of drafts, direct sun and heater vents. Analytical models like the BCE224I-1S do best on a heavy table near a wall.
- Lift it by the base only. The glass draft shield is not a handle. Keep the box and inserts for shipping later.
- Let it acclimatize. If the balance arrived cold, leave it unplugged at the bench for about 2 hours so no condensation forms inside.
- Analytical draft shield (BCE224I-1S, BCE223I-1S): slide the side panel fully open, fit the pan support on the pan retainer and place the pan on top.
- Frame draft shield (BCE1202-1S, BCE2202-1S): remove the two transport locks and keep them, set the frame draft shield on the balance, attach the four shock absorbers, then place the pan.
- Connect power. Fit the US plug adapter on the power supply until it clicks, plug the cable into the balance, then into the wall outlet. BOOTING appears and the balance runs a self-test.
- Level it. Turn the leveling feet until the bubble sits in the center of the circle. On 10 mg models, screw the rear feet down until they touch the bench so the balance stands on four feet and the front support foot is clear.
- Warm it up. Leave it on for about 2 hours before calibrating or weighing to full readability.
Setup tips from our bench
- Most first-day complaints we hear are a drifting last digit. Close the draft shield doors, check that nothing touches the pan, then try the Ambient condition key: V.STABLE, STABLE, UNSTABL. or V.UNSTBL.
- Use a container and Tare rather than putting powders on the pan, and use anti-static weigh boats for dry samples on the 0.1 mg models.
- Level again every time you move the balance, then calibrate. Sartorius recommends calibrating daily at switch-on, after leveling, after a change in temperature, humidity or air pressure, and after a move.
- On 10 mg models, keep the transport locks in the box. Refit them before you ship the balance for calibration or repair.

Calibrating an Entris II
Calibration finds how far the reading is from a known mass; adjustment corrects it. The Entris II does both in one run when CAL.SEQ. is set to ADJUST (the factory setting), or shows you the error first with CAL.-ADJ. For the general case, see internal vs external calibration balances.
isoCAL on I models (BCE224I-1S, BCE223I-1S, BCE1202I-1S)
isoCAL uses a built-in weight. It starts on its own after a temperature change or a time interval since the last adjustment: 1.5 K or 4 hours on the 0.1 mg models, 2 K or 6 hours on the 1 mg and 10 mg models. It only runs when the load on the pan has not changed for 2 minutes, the load is no more than 2 percent of capacity, nobody has touched a key for 2 minutes and the menu is closed.
- ISOCAL = ON (factory setting): the isoCAL key flashes, CAL. counts down for 19 seconds, and the run starts unless you load the pan or press a key.
- ISOCAL = NOTE: the isoCAL key flashes and waits for you to press it. Handy when a long weighing must not be interrupted.
- ISOCAL = OFF: no automatic runs. You can still calibrate internally at any time.
To calibrate internally on demand: in SETUP > BALANCE set CAL./ADJ. to INT.CAL. (the factory setting on I models), empty the pan, press Zero, then Adjust. CAL.RUN. shows during the run and CAL.END when it is done.
External calibration (BCE1202-1S, BCE2202-1S, BCE224-1S, or checking an I model)
- Get the right weight: 200 g class E2 for the BCE224, 200 g class F1 for the BCE223, 1,000 g class F1 for the BCE1202 and 2,000 g class F1 for the BCE2202. Weights are not included; see our calibration weight classes guide and shop calibration weights.
- In SETUP > BALANCE, set CAL./ADJ. to EXT.CAL. to use the preset weight. To use a different value, enter it under INPUT > CAL. WT. and choose E.CAL.USR. instead.
- Let the balance warm up, empty the pan and wait for a stable zero. Press Zero, then Adjust.
- Place the weight shown on the display in the center of the pan. A + sign means the weight on the pan is too heavy, a – sign too light.
- With CAL.SEQ. = ADJUST the adjustment runs by itself; with CAL.-ADJ. the error is shown and you press Confirm to adjust. CAL.END marks the end.
- Remove the weight and check zero, then check a test weight near the middle of the range.
I models can still be checked with an external weight, and we recommend it: isoCAL corrects the balance against its own internal weight, while an outside check shows the balance against a traceable standard. To print a GLP record of every calibration, set DATA.OUT. > PRNT.PAR. > GLP to CAL.-ADJ. with a printer or PC connected.
Entris II warning messages and error codes
| Display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| HIGH or ERR 55 | Over capacity | Take weight off until the load is under capacity |
| LOW or ERR 54 | Weighing cell signal too low: usually no pan, or a weight left on at power-up and then removed | Fit the pan and switch the balance off and on; if it repeats, call for service |
| ERR 02 | Calibration could not start: the balance was not zeroed or is loaded | Empty the pan, press Zero, then start calibration again |
| ERR 10 | Tare not possible while an application holds the tare memory | Exit the application with Back |
| ERR 11 | Weight cannot go into tare memory: zero or negative | Check the sample, zero first if needed |
| APP.ERR. | Application got an invalid weight (too light, negative or empty pan) | Place a sample above the minimum load |
| DIS.ERR. | Value cannot be shown in the display format | Change resolution, unit or decimal places |
| COMM.ERR. | Display module and weighing cell are not talking | Wait for it to reconnect; if it repeats, call for service |
| PRT.ERR. | Print key locked because the interface is in xBPI mode | Reset the menu to factory settings |
| SYS.ERR. | Memory error in the display module | Switch off and on; if it repeats, call for service |
| ISOCAL.E. / WARMU.xx / VALUE.ERR. | Approved models only: calibration due, warm-up minutes left, or invalid value | Calibrate, wait out the warm-up, or zero the balance |
A blank display is almost always power: check the adapter at both ends. A reading that wanders usually means drafts, vibration or something touching the pan; set the ambient condition one step less stable. For other brands’ codes, see our scale error codes guide. If an error will not clear, our repair bench can help.
Connecting to a PC or printer
Every Entris II has a USB-C port and a 9-pin RS-232 port. On USB, set DEVICE > USB > DAT.REC. to PC.SPREA. to send readings straight into a spreadsheet, or PC.TEXT to type them into any open program like a keyboard; Sartorius printers and second displays are detected automatically. RS-232 defaults to SBI at 9600 baud, odd parity, 8 data bits and hardware handshake. Cables are not included: the Sartorius YCC-USB-C-B cable connects to a USB-B printer or hub, and the YCC-D09MM cable links 9-pin serial devices. More in our USB vs RS-232 guide.
Selling by weight
The -1S models in this guide (BCE224I-1S, BCE223I-1S, BCE1202-1S and BCE2202-1S) are laboratory versions and are not NTEP approved. The -1NUS versions are NTEP approved under Certificate of Conformance 22-017A1: the BCE224-1NUS is Class I, and the 1 mg and 10 mg models such as the BCE1202-1NUS are Class II. For buying or selling precious metals by weight, choose a Class II model such as the Sartorius BCE1202-1NUS (1,200 g x 0.01 g). Our legal for trade jewelry scale guide and what NTEP means explain the options.
Texas note: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. See TDA’s scales used in trade guidance (PDF) and our TDA scale certification guide, or call us or TDA to confirm your use.
Care, cleaning and storage
Switch off and unplug the balance before you take the draft shield apart. Brush or vacuum powder out of the chamber, then wipe with a cloth that is only slightly damp, using mild soapy water for stubborn residue. Avoid solvents, chloride or abrasive cleaners, and keep liquid out of the pan opening. On analytical draft shield models, loosen the screws inside the side panels to slide the glass panels out for washing, and set them on a soft surface. The CR2032 backup battery is rated for a service life of at least 10 years at room temperature. Comparing balance types? Frequently asked questions
Where can I find the Sartorius Entris II manual?
Sartorius publishes two Entris II Essential line manuals: WBC6002 for the analytical and milligram models (BCE224I-1S, BCE223I-1S and others) and WBC6001 for the 10 mg and 0.1 g precision models (BCE1202-1S, BCE2202-1S and others).
How do I calibrate a Sartorius BCE224I-1S?
Let it warm up for about 2 hours, empty the pan, press Zero, then Adjust. With CAL./ADJ. set to INT.CAL. it calibrates with its internal isoCAL weight and shows CAL.END when done. To check it with an external weight, set CAL./ADJ. to EXT.CAL. and use a 200 g class E2 weight.
How do I calibrate a Sartorius BCE1202-1S?
The BCE1202-1S uses an external 1,000 g class F1 weight. Set SETUP > BALANCE > CAL./ADJ. to EXT.CAL., empty the pan, press Zero, then Adjust, and place the weight shown. CAL.END marks the end; remove the weight.
What calibration weight does the BCE223I-1S use?
Sartorius recommends a 200 g class F1 weight for the BCE223 and BCE223I. Its isoCAL internal weight handles routine adjustment; use the external weight for checks.
What does ERR 54 or LOW mean on an Entris II?
The weighing cell signal is too low, usually because the pan is missing or a weight was on the pan at power-up and then removed. Fit the pan and switch the balance off and on. If it repeats, the balance needs service.
Why won’t isoCAL start on my Entris II?
isoCAL waits until the load has not changed for 2 minutes, the load is no more than 2 percent of capacity, no key has been pressed for 2 minutes and the menu is closed. Clear the pan, close the menu and leave it alone, or press Adjust to calibrate now.
How do I reset an Entris II to factory settings?
Press Menu, open SETUP > GEN.SERV., set MENU.RES. to DEFAULT and confirm. If the menu will not change, check DEVICE > EXTRAS > MENU is set to EDITABL. and that the access switch on the back is not locked.
Is the Sartorius BCE224I-1S legal for trade?
No. The -1S models are laboratory versions and are not NTEP approved. The -1NUS versions are NTEP approved under CC 22-017A1. For buying or selling precious metals by weight, choose a Class II model such as the Sartorius BCE1202-1NUS.
