Sartorius Entris 224-1S Manual, Explained: Setup, Calibration and Error Codes
Short answer: the Sartorius Entris 224-1S runs on the Entris operating instructions WEN6001. For the 224-1S it comes down to six jobs: assemble the shield plate, shield disk, pan support and pan inside the draft shield; level it with the two front feet; let it acclimatize and warm up for 30 minutes; set the ambient filter for your room; calibrate with a 200 g E2 weight; and read the error codes when something looks off. Download the manual from Sartorius (WEN6001, PDF); this guide puts the 224-1S numbers in one place.

The Sartorius Entris 224-1S (model ENTRIS224-1S) is a 220 g x 0.0001 g analytical balance from the first-generation Sartorius Entris line, with a sliding-panel glass draft shield, a 90 mm pan, a backlit display, a 25-pin RS-232 port and external calibration. Sartorius wrote one manual for the whole Entris family, from the 60 g Entris 64 to the 8,200 g Entris 8201, so owners have to pick the 224-1S numbers out of shared tables. Below are the Entris 224-1S figures from that manual, with display messages written as the balance shows them. If you run the newer Entris II, see our Entris II manual guide instead.

What comes in the box
- Balance, weighing pan and pan support.
- AC adapter with country-specific plug adapters (the US plug is YEPS01-PS1).
- Draft shield parts for the 0.1 mg models: sliding-panel draft shield, shield disk, shield plate and dust cover.
- Not included: the 200 g E2 calibration weight, data cables, a printer, the YRB11Z external battery pack and the YDK03 density kit. Keep the original packaging for shipping and mail-in service.
Setting up the Entris 224-1S
- Unpack and inspect: check the balance for shipping damage right away and save all packaging. Do not ship it with cables plugged in.
- Pick the spot: a firm bench away from heaters, direct sun, drafts from windows and doors, vibration and high humidity. At 0.1 mg, an air vent or a busy walkway shows up in the last digit.
- Let it acclimatize: after moving the balance from a cold place to a warmer room, leave it unplugged at room temperature for about 2 hours so no moisture condenses inside.
- Assemble the weighing chamber in this order: shield plate, shield disk, pan support, weighing pan.
- Level it: turn the two front leveling feet until the air bubble sits in the center of the level indicator. Level again every time the balance is moved.
- Power it: push the US plug adapter into the AC adapter until it clicks, connect the angle plug to the socket on the back, then plug into the wall. Press the On/Off key; the balance runs a self-test and tares itself.
- Warm up for 30 minutes, then calibrate; the steps are in the Entris 224-1S calibration section below.
The lug on the back takes an anti-theft cable or lock. Connect or disconnect a printer or PC only with the balance unplugged.

Basic weighing and taring
- Press On/Off. After the self-test the display reads
0.0000 g. - Place an empty container on the pan and press Tare.
- Add the sample and close the draft shield panel, then wait for the stability symbol before you read or print.
- Press Print to send the weight to a printer or PC.
Entris 224-1S calibration with a 200 g E2 weight
The 224-1S has no internal weight, so it calibrates with an external 200 g weight of accuracy class E2 or better (Sartorius part YCW522-AC-02). Models with an i in the name, such as the Entris 224i-1S, carry a motorized internal weight; for the trade-offs see internal vs external calibration balances. Check that the calibration key is set to external calibration: Setup, Bal.Scal., Cal./adj., Cal.Ext. (menu code 1.1.9.1). The calibration weight unit is grams by default (code 1.1.11).
- Warm up for 30 minutes, clear the pan and close the draft shield.
- Press Tare so the display shows zero.
- Press the calibration key. The display shows
Cal.Ext., stores the zero point and then flashes the weight it wants (200 g). - Place the 200 g weight in the center of the pan and close the panel. A minus sign means the weight is too low, a plus sign means it is too high; the display stops flashing once the weight is within the limit.
- When
Cal.endappears, the balance shows the calibration weight. Remove it; the display returns to zero.
The routine only runs with an empty, tared, stable pan, and the weight on the pan must be within 2 percent of the nominal 200 g. Otherwise the balance shows err 02. After calibration any running application is cleared, so restart counting or percent weighing. Our calibration weight classes guide explains E2 and F1, our calibration weights guide covers handling, and we stock calibration weights. Then check a light load and one near 200 g; our how often should a scale be calibrated guide helps set a schedule.
The operating menu and the codes that matter
Hold the Select key in weighing mode until Applic. appears. Select scrolls, Enter goes down a level and confirms (a small o marks the active setting), CF goes back up, and holding CF saves and exits. Press On/Off to leave without saving. Under Languag. you can switch the menu to codes instead of text (code 5.8).
| Menu code | Setting | Factory setting and choices |
|---|---|---|
| 1.1.1 | Ambient conditions (filter) | Stable; also Very stable, Unstable, Very unstable |
| 1.1.2 | Application filter | Final readout; Filling for dosing powder or liquid |
| 1.1.3 | Stability range | 2 digits; 1/4 to 8 digits |
| 1.1.6 | Auto zero | On |
| 1.1.7 | Basic weight unit | Grams; see the unit list |
| 1.1.9 | Function of the calibration key | Cal.Ext. for the 224-1S |
| 1.5.1 to 1.5.6 | RS-232 interface | 1200 baud, odd parity, 1 stop bit, hardware handshake, 7 data bits, printer mode; SBI (ASCII) for a PC |
| 1.6.1 | Print mode | Manual after stability; automatic modes available |
| 1.8.3 | Keypad | Free; can be locked |
| 1.8.6 | Display backlight | On |
| 1.9.1 | Reset menu | Restores factory settings |
| 4.1 to 4.3 | Information | Software version, serial number, model |
Applications: counting, percent, units and density
- Counting (Z): pick a reference quantity from 1 to 100 pieces with the Select key (tap for steps of 1, hold for steps of 10), add that many parts and press Enter. Automatic reference updating (code 2.3.2) refines the piece weight as you add more.
- Percent weighing: shows the load as a percentage of a reference, with 0 to 3 decimal places (code 2.4.1).
- Unit toggling: up to 4 application units besides the basic unit, from a list of 23 that includes milligrams, carats, ounces, troy ounces, pennyweights and grains. Some units depend on the country version.
- Animal weighing for moving samples, and calculation with a factor.
- Density determination of solids, using the YDK03 density kit (not included) made for the Entris 224, 124 and 64.
- Input: an ID of up to 7 characters, such as an inventory number, for printouts.
Connecting the Entris 224-1S to a printer or PC
The 224-1S has a 25-pin RS-232 port. Sartorius lists a 25-pin to USB-A cable (YCC01-USBM2) and 25-pin to 9-pin cables (7357314, 6965619), all not included. For a PC, set the data output to SBI (ASCII) at code 1.5.6 and match the baud rate, parity and handshake to your software. Sartorius publishes the interface commands in its “Data Interface Descriptions for Entris Models” file. Our scale to computer guide covers USB and RS-232 adapters.

Cleaning and care
- Unplug the AC adapter and any interface cable first, and keep liquid out of the housing.
- Wipe the balance with a cloth lightly moistened with soap solution, then dry it with a soft cloth.
- The coated plastic top and bottom of the housing take acetone; keep acetone and strong cleaners off the keypad foil, the power and data ports and other plastic parts.
- To clean the pan, reach under the shield disk and lift it out together with the pan so the weighing system is not stressed.
- Clean the stainless pan separately with a stainless-safe household cleaner, rinse it and let it dry.

Selling by weight: NTEP and the Entris 224-1S
The 224-1S is a laboratory model. For weighing that sets a price, such as selling a product by weight, use an NTEP-approved balance: the Sartorius BCE224-1NUS is NTEP accuracy Class I on Certificate of Conformance 22-017A1 (BCE Series), listed as Active on NCWM’s certificate search on November 2, 2026, with d = 0.1 mg and e = 1 mg. Our what is NTEP guide explains the classes.
Texas note: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. See TDA’s scales used in trade guidance (PDF) and our TDA scale certification guide, or call us or TDA to confirm your use.
Who uses the Entris 224-1S
- Research and QC labs: weighing standards, reagents and samples to 0.1 mg.
- Pharmacies and compounding rooms: weighing small amounts of active ingredients for records.
- Schools and teaching labs: analytical weighing with simple keys and a draft shield.
- Plastics, chemicals and coatings: sample prep, filler and additive checks, and density of solids with the YDK03 kit.
Setup tips from our technicians
- Our TDA-registered technicians recalibrate after every move, right after re-leveling, to hold 0.1 mg accuracy.
- Give a balance that came in from a cold delivery van the full 2 hours unplugged, then the 30-minute warm-up.
- Set the ambient filter to Unstable near a fume hood or vent before you blame the weigh cell.
- Use the same side door every time and let the reading settle with the panels closed.
- Handle the 200 g E2 weight with tweezers or gloves and keep it in its case.
Common mistakes we see
- Calibrating with a 100 g or F1 weight; the 224-1S calls for 200 g, class E2 or better.
- Starting calibration with a container still tared on the pan, which brings up err 02.
- Weighing before the 30-minute warm-up is over.
- Lifting the pan by itself instead of together with the shield disk.
- Cleaning the keypad with acetone.
