Load Cell Rental: Rent vs Buy for Proof Tests, Lifts and Short Jobs
Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated November 5, 2026 · Prices checked November 5, 2026
Short answer: rent a load cell when you need a capacity or cable setup for a short proof test, lift check or one-off project, and buy when that capacity will stay in your toolbox. Tell us the capacity, tension or compression, connector and whether you need a calibration certificate, then contact us or call (832) 290-3120. If you prefer to own the cell, the Optima OP-312-10K S-type (10,000 lb) is $288 and the MNM Scales IDS-672-10K pancake (10,000 lb) is $349.
This guide is for test labs, riggers, contractors and plant teams deciding between a load cell rental and a purchase. MNM Scales has sold, calibrated and repaired scales and load cells for over 30 years from our shop in Cypress, Texas, and we are one of the largest scale distributors.
When load cell rental makes sense
- Short jobs: a proof test, crane or hoist check, or a temporary tank weigh that lasts days or weeks rather than years.
- Capacity you rarely need: a 10,000 lb or higher cell for one project, when buying would sit unused afterward.
- Matched gear for a visit: a cell, cable and indicator set up together, with a calibration certificate for the system when your procedure calls for it.
- While yours is out: keep work moving if your cell is in for repair or calibration.
To ask about a load cell rental, use contact us or call (832) 290-3120. Tell us capacity, tension or compression, thread or mount style, cable length and connector, and whether you need a certificate. We will confirm what we can supply.
Rent vs buy a load cell
| Rent | Buy | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | One job or a short series of tests | Repeated use at the same capacity |
| Upfront cost | Lower for a short window | Higher, then yours to keep |
| Setup | We match cell, cable and indicator when available | You own the parts and keep them calibrated |
| Certificate | Ask for the system certificate you need with the rental | Add calibration when you purchase or on a schedule |
| When it fits | Proof tests, lift checks, temporary installations | Standing test stands, hoppers, cranes you run often |

Rules: NTEP and certificates
A load cell used only for your own proof tests or process checks is in-house use. Selling by weight with a scale built around that cell is commercial, and the finished scale has to be legal for trade. Call us before you put a cell into a trade system. Our NTEP guide explains the certificate, and we handle legal-for-trade scale calibration in Texas.
Texas note: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. See TDA’s scales used in trade guidance (PDF) and our TDA scale certification guide, or call us or TDA to confirm your use.
Calibration and rental
- System calibration over 150 kg: our TDA-registered technicians calibrate the cell with its indicator using known weights. Add in-house calibration with a certificate ($495) or NIST calibration with a NIST-traceable certificate ($995). See NIST vs in-house certificates and load cell calibration.
- Bare-cell checks and other capacities: call for a quote.
- On-site service: $295 + $2 per mile per visit across the Houston area, plus calibration per system; see on-site calibration.
- Mail-in and repairs: use mail-in calibration and ask us about repairs for the brands we sell.
- Load cell rental questions: contact us or call (832) 290-3120. We also rent all types of scales for short-term weighing needs.
Need a load cell for a short job, or ready to buy? Tell us capacity, tension or compression, mount style and whether you need a certificate. Cables, eye bolts and indicators are not included unless the listing says so. Shop: 21249 FM 529 Rd, Cypress, TX 77433, visits by appointment.
Frequently asked questions
When should I rent a load cell instead of buying?
Rent for a short proof test, lift check or temporary installation. Buy when you will reuse the same capacity often.
What do I need to tell you for a load cell rental?
Capacity, tension or compression, thread or mount style, cable and connector, how long you need it, and whether you need a calibration certificate.
How do I get a quote to rent a load cell?
Contact us with the job details and we will quote what fits.
What load cells can I buy today?
In-stock examples include the Optima OP-312-10K S-type at $288, the MNM Scales IDS-672-10K pancake at $349, and the A&D LC1205-T005 at $189.35.
Do rented or purchased load cells come calibrated?
Ask for the certificate you need with a rental. For purchases, system calibration over 150 kg is $495 in-house or $995 NIST-traceable; other work is call for a quote.
Can I rent a cell with an indicator?
Often yes when we have a matching set. Tell us the connector and capacity so we can confirm.
