Scale Battery Replacement: Signs, Matching Voltage and Safe DIY Swap Steps
Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated November 5, 2026 · Prices checked November 5, 2026
Short answer: scale battery replacement starts with matching voltage, amp-hour rating, size and terminals to the pack your scale was built for. If the display fades mid-shift, the charger never finishes, or runtime has collapsed, the sealed lead-acid or OEM pack is the usual culprit. In-stock options include the Leoch DJW6-5.0 6 V 5 Ah SLA at $98, the OHAUS Valor replacement battery (BW T31) at $56, the CAS EB rechargeable battery at $94, and the CAS IE crane scale 6 V 5 Ah battery at $94. This is a DIY matching and swap guide for rechargeable scale batteries. It hands off to our repair desk when the job needs board work, sealing or place-in-service. It does not restate repair service terms, and it is not a commercial food-scale buying guide. MNM Scales has sold, calibrated and repaired scales for over 30 years from our shop in Cypress, Texas.
Signs you need a scale battery replacement
- Runtime drops to a fraction of a shift even after a full charge
- The charger stays in charge mode or the pack feels warm while charging
- The display dims, blanks under load, or the low-battery icon returns minutes after a charge
- The case is swollen, leaking, or the terminals are corroded
Before you order, open the battery cover and read the label on the old pack: voltage, Ah, dimensions and terminal type. Compare that to the listing. Similar-looking packs can differ by connector or height.
Match voltage, Ah, size and terminals
Voltage must match (for example 6 V). Amp-hour (Ah) should meet or slightly exceed the original rating so runtime is restored. Physical size must fit the compartment without forcing the cover. Terminals (spade, wire leads or OEM plugs) must mate with the scale harness. When the label is gone, photograph the compartment and send it with your scale model to contact us before you buy.

Safe DIY swap steps
- Unplug the AC adapter and power the scale off. For crane scales, lower the load and secure the hook.
- Open the battery cover with the correct screwdriver; keep screws and gaskets together.
- Note wire colors and terminal orientation, or photograph them, before you disconnect.
- Remove the old pack. Install the new pack in the same orientation; seat terminals fully without bending tabs.
- Close the cover so any gasket seals evenly. Power on, charge per the maker instructions, then verify a stable zero and a known weight.
If the cover will not seal, a wire is damaged, or the scale still faults after a known-good pack, stop and use scale repair in Houston. Related: replace a scale cable and scale error codes explained.
Charging habits that protect the new pack
Use the charger made for that scale or pack voltage. Avoid deep discharge when you can; recharge after the shift instead of leaving a flat pack for weeks. Store spares cool and dry. A charged spare lets one pack work while the other charges on crane and counter scales that share a 6 V SLA size.
Rules: when battery work meets legal-for-trade
Swapping a user-accessible battery on a sealed commercial scale can affect place-in-service if you break a seal or disturb a legal-for-trade configuration. If your scale is used to sell by weight and carries a seal, ask us before you open it. Our NTEP guide covers certificates, and we handle legal-for-trade scale calibration in Texas.
Texas note: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. See TDA’s scales used in trade guidance (PDF) and our TDA scale certification guide, or call us or TDA to confirm your use.
Calibration and rental after a battery swap
- After DIY replacement: verify zero and a known weight. If readings drift or the seal was disturbed, schedule calibration with our TDA-registered technicians.
- On-site service: $295 + $2 per mile per visit across the Houston area, plus calibration per scale; see on-site calibration and scale calibration in Houston.
- Mail-in and rentals: use mail-in calibration and rent all types of scales while yours is in for service.
- Repair handoff: when DIY stops at a damaged harness, swollen pack or sealed indicator, start at scale repair in Houston (service terms live on that page).

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which scale battery replacement to order?
Match voltage, Ah, physical size and terminal type to the label on your old pack, and confirm the scale model against the listing. When the label is missing, send photos to us before you buy.
Can I replace a scale battery myself?
Yes on many user-accessible compartments if you unplug power, match the pack, and reseal the cover. Stop and call repair when wires are damaged, the cover will not seal, or the scale is sealed for trade.
What voltage do CAS IE crane scale batteries use?
The CAS IE replacement listed here is 6 V 5 Ah with spade terminals, sized about 6.6 x 1.25 x 2.6 in for IE series crane scales such as the IE-2000C.
Does an OHAUS Valor need a special battery?
Yes. Use the OHAUS BW T31 / 72198198 Valor replacement pack listed for those models rather than a generic SLA of unknown fit.
When should I call for repair instead of DIY?
Call when the pack is swollen, the harness is burnt, the indicator stays in error after a known-good battery, or a legal-for-trade seal is involved. Start at our scale repair page and we will take it from there.
