Precision Balance NTEP Gold Cannabis Scale

MNM Scales stocks NTEP balances for gold buyers, jewelers, pawn shops, coin dealers and cannabis dispensaries, with OHAUS Scout SJX/E and Explorer models and A&D FX-iN and Apollo GF-AN balances in one place. Every balance here is NTEP approved for selling by weight. As one of the largest scale distributors in Texas and an authorized OHAUS and A&D dealer, we ship every balance free from Cypress, TX, and we can calibrate it before it ships.

How an NTEP balance is rated

A balance used to price goods by weight has to carry an NTEP Certificate of Conformance and be set up in its legal-for-trade mode. Two numbers decide what it can be used for:

  • Accuracy class. Class II covers precious metals, gemstones and most dispensary sales. Class III suits coarser retail weighing, such as bulk silver lots or packaged goods.
  • Verification division (e). This is the smallest step you may charge for. The A&D FX-120iN reads 0.001 g but trades at e = 0.01 g. The OHAUS SJX1502N/E reads 0.01 g and trades at e = 0.1 g.

Pick the division your price step needs, then the capacity that covers your largest lot. Our guide to NTEP legal-for-trade scales explains the rules in plain terms.

Choosing the right NTEP balance

Gold buying and jewelry counters

Most gold buyers start with the SJX1502N/E or the FX-200iN. Both read finely enough to show small gold lots clearly, and both run in trade units customers know, such as pennyweight and troy ounces. See our legal-for-trade jewelry scale guide.

Cannabis dispensaries

Dispensaries selling by the gram usually choose a Class II balance certified at 0.01 g, such as the FX-120iN or FX-200iN. Our best scale for a cannabis dispensary guide compares the main options.

Coins, bullion and silver

Larger lots need more capacity. The SJX6201N/E handles 6,200 g, and the GF-10001AN and EX10201N go past 10 kg for bags and bars.

Hemp testing and back-office checks

Testing labs and grow operations often pair a trade balance at the counter with a finer balance in the back. The OHAUS Pioneer PX124 ($2,289) and OHAUS Adventurer AX124 ($2,579) analytical balances in this category read to 0.1 mg with internal calibration for sample work.

Calibration and Texas placed-in-service

Every balance on this page can ship calibrated from our Cypress, TX shop. Calibration is priced by the balance’s maximum capacity:

Scale maximum capacity In-house calibration with NIST-tested weights NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate
Up to 2.2 kg (4.85 lb) $95 $395
2.2–6.2 kg (4.85–13.7 lb) $195 $495
6.2–35 kg (13.7–77 lb) $250 $595

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

The FX-120iN, FX-200iN and SJX1502N/E fall in the up to 2.2 kg tier. The SJX6201N/E falls in the 2.2–6.2 kg tier, and the 10.2 kg balances fall in the 6.2–35 kg tier. Calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after we receive the balance, and our mail-in scale calibration service covers balances bought anywhere. In Texas, a commercial scale must be placed into service and registered with the Texas Department of Agriculture. MNM Scales is TDA licensed with registered technicians for all scale classes, and we handle the RWM-780 and RWM-700 paperwork for you. Read how the RWM-780 placed-in-service report works.

NTEP balance FAQ

What makes a balance legal for trade?

An NTEP Certificate of Conformance for the model, use within its accuracy class and verification division, and, in Texas, a placed-in-service registration with the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Which NTEP balance is best for a dispensary?

A Class II balance certified at 0.01 g, such as the A&D FX-120iN or FX-200iN, covers gram and eighth sales with room to spare.

Why does a balance read 0.001 g but sell at 0.01 g?

The readability is the display step. The certified division (e) is the step NTEP approves for pricing, so an FX-200iN reads 0.001 g and trades at 0.01 g.

Which balance should a gold buyer choose?

The OHAUS SJX1502N/E is the popular choice at $299. For finer gemstone work, the SJX323N/E certifies at 0.01 g.

Can you place my balance in service in Texas?

Yes. Our TDA licensed technicians calibrate and place trade balances in service and handle the RWM-780 and RWM-700 paperwork.

How fast is calibration?

Usually 1–3 business days after we receive the balance, with in-house or NIST-traceable certificates available.

Is shipping free?

Yes. NTEP balances ship free, and we offer UPS 2nd Day and Next Day for faster delivery.
