A Town Named to Sell Land in St. Louis
Missouri City got its name in 1893, when a land promoter bought acreage here and named the new town to match advertising aimed at buyers in St. Louis. Rail lines came through early, and sugarcane from nearby plantations was shipped down the line to Sugar Land, alongside cotton, corn and cattle. The city incorporated on March 13, 1956 and grew quickly as Houston spread southwest.
For decades Missouri City was mostly homes and retail. That is changing. The city’s business parks along Beltway 8 and US 90A now hold food processors, advanced manufacturers and logistics operations, which are the industries the city’s economic development team targets. Clinics, pharmacies, grocers and restaurants serve a large residential base.

Food plants that label product by weight rely on legal-for-trade scales with printers, like the MNM Scales 60 lb unit shown above, and the printed weight must match what the scale reads. Manufacturers count kits and small parts on counting scales such as the Brecknell B140. See our article on connecting a scale to a computer if you log weights.
Repairs for Food and Production Lines
- Label weights that do not match the display. Usually a printer or settings issue; we repair it and verify every label.
- Washdown damage to food-plant scales: water in the junction box or a failed seal. We dry, reseal and recalibrate.
- Counting errors from sample weights or a weak load cell.
- Pallet and floor scales damaged by forklifts, tested cell by cell.
- Patient scales in clinics that disagree room to room, leveled, repaired and recalibrated.
Repairs are quoted per job and finish with a calibration. Rentals keep a line running while a scale is in the shop.
Food Labels, Trade Rules and Schedules
A food plant that labels packages by net weight, and any store that sells by the pound, needs a scale that meets NIST Handbook 44 and is suitable for its use, usually an NTEP-approved model, placed into service by a registered technician of a TDA-licensed service company, with the RWM-780 filed and RWM-700 registration current. Food safety audits often ask for a NIST-traceable certificate. See legal-for-trade calibration.
Production and labeling scales are often calibrated every three to six months, with daily checks; clinic and retail scales typically yearly. On-site calibration is finished during the visit, and drop-offs at our Cypress shop usually take 1 to 3 business days.
