Horse Scale Guide: Platform Size, Capacity and Barn-Built Scales for Horses, Foals and Minis
Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated November 2, 2026 · Prices checked November 2, 2026
Short answer: a horse scale needs a platform long and wide enough for all four hooves and a capacity above the heaviest horse you weigh. For foals and miniature horses, the Brecknell PS1000 weighs up to 1,000 lb in 0.5 lb steps on a 55.75 x 20.25 inch tread plate platform with ramped ends, at $533.99. For full-size horses, build a platform in the barn on a four-load-cell kit such as the MNM Scales MS-20k floor scale kit ($399), which includes four 10,000 lb load cells, a junction box, an LP7515 indicator, feet, hardware and cable. Call (832) 290-3120 and tell us about your horses and your barn.
This guide is for equine barns, boarding and training stables, show and racing stables, and veterinary practices that want to weigh horses on a scale. MNM Scales has sold, calibrated and repaired scales for over 30 years from our shop in Cypress, Texas. For dogs, cats and other clinic patients, see our veterinary scales buying guide; for goats, sheep and pigs, see our small livestock scale guide; and for load bars under a working alley, see our large-animal alley and load bar guide.
How to choose a horse scale
- Know the heaviest horse. Choose a capacity well above the heaviest horse you will weigh, so the scale works in its normal range.
- Size the platform. The horse has to stand square with all four hooves on the deck and nothing touching the floor or a wall.
- Plan the footing. A non-slip surface such as tread plate or a rubber mat helps a horse walk on calmly and stand still.
- Decide portable or fixed. A ready-made platform with handles can be stored between uses; a barn-built platform on load cells stays in place.
- Pick the indicator. A large, clear display, a Hold key and an RS-232 port for records make weighing faster.
- Plan the power. Check whether the indicator runs on an outlet in the barn, on batteries, or both.
- Calibrate after setup. A scale built or moved on site should be calibrated where it will be used.
Platform size and capacity: horses vs foals and minis
The Brecknell PS1000 has a 1,000 lb capacity and a 55.75 x 20.25 inch platform, which suits foals and miniature horses. A full-size horse can weigh more than 1,000 lb and needs a longer, wider deck, so full-size horses are weighed on a platform built for them on a load cell kit.
| Horses you weigh | Platform | Capacity | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foals and miniature horses | Ready-made 55.75 x 20.25 inch platform with ramped ends | 1,000 lb x 0.5 lb | Brecknell PS1000 |
| Full-size horses | Barn-built deck sized to the horse, on four load cells | Set by the platform you build | MNM Scales MS-20k kit (four 10,000 lb load cells) or MNM Scales four-load-cell kit (four 5,000 lb load cells) |
| A barn that already has load cells | Existing deck | Set by the existing load cells | MNM Scales indicator kit |
Building a horse platform on a load cell kit
A barn-built horse scale is a rigid deck resting on a load cell at each corner, with the cells wired to a junction box and an indicator. The MS-20k kit includes the four load cells, the junction box, the LP7515 indicator, feet, hardware and cable; the four-load-cell kit ships with four 5,000 lb shear-beam load cells and an LCD indicator with RS-232C, and its system capacity depends on the platform you build. Our floor scale buying guide covers building your own floor scale, and our load cell junction box guide explains the wiring.
- Pick a level, solid base such as a concrete pad, and size the deck so a horse can stand square on it.
- Build a deck stiff enough that it does not flex under a moving horse.
- Set a load cell at each corner on a firm, level footing, so all four share the load.
- Route the cables to the junction box where hooves, rodents and water cannot reach them.
- Add a non-slip mat on the deck and a gentle approach at the entry.
- Mount the indicator where the handler can see it while holding the horse.
- Have the finished scale calibrated in place before you rely on its weights.
Footing, flooring and portability
Horses weigh best when they walk on calmly and stand still. The PS1000 has a tread plate surface, ramped ends and adjustable foot pads for uneven floors, and two handles to move and store it. On a barn-built deck, a rubber mat gives grip and quiets hoof noise, and a flush or gently ramped entry helps a horse step on. Keep the gaps around the deck clear of bedding, mud and gravel, since anything that touches the deck and the floor at the same time changes the reading.
Choosing the indicator
- PS1000 indicator: the SBI 140 switches between lb, kg and lb/oz, holds a stable weight for animals that move, and sends readings to a printer or PC through RS-232 (10 foot cable included). It runs on the included AC adapter or four AAA batteries. A floor stand, printer and remote display are sold separately (not included).
- LP7515 in the MS-20k kit: an LCD indicator with RS-232C; see our LP7515 calibration guide.
- Own load cells already? The MNM Scales indicator kit ($218) is an LCD indicator with RS-232C for livestock, floor and platform scales.
- More on displays: our scale indicator buying guide compares indicator features.
Why a horse’s weight is worth recording
Barns weigh horses to keep a record over time: to see how a foal is growing, to follow a horse’s condition through the seasons, and to plan feed and hauling loads. Weighing on a scale gives a number you can repeat and compare from one visit to the next. Share the records with your veterinarian, who decides how to use them.

Setup tips and common mistakes
- Level and solid: set the platform or load cells on a level, solid base so every corner carries its share.
- Whole horse on the deck: wait until all four hooves are on the platform and the horse is standing still before reading.
- Keep the deck free: clear bedding, mud and stones from around the deck, and keep the lead rope slack so the handler is not pulling on the horse.
- Zero before each horse: check that the empty scale reads zero before the next horse steps on.
- Use Hold: on the PS1000, Hold captures a stable weight while the horse shifts.
- Protect the cables: run cables where hooves cannot step on them and water cannot pool.
- Stay within capacity: weigh full-size horses on a deck built for them, and keep the PS1000 for foals and miniature horses.
Rules: horse scales in Texas
A scale used in the barn to keep weight records is used for in-house weighing. TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. Any scale used to buy or sell by weight has to be legal for trade, and we recommend NTEP models for that use. Our TDA-registered technicians can check your use; see our NTEP guide and our TDA scale certification guide.

Frequently asked questions
What size scale do I need to weigh a horse?
The platform has to hold all four hooves with the horse standing square, and the capacity has to be above your heaviest horse. Full-size horses need a deck built for them; foals and miniature horses fit the 55.75 x 20.25 inch Brecknell PS1000.
Can the Brecknell PS1000 weigh a horse?
The PS1000 weighs up to 1,000 lb in 0.5 lb steps, so it is for foals and miniature horses. For full-size horses, build a platform on a four-load-cell kit.
Can I build my own horse scale?
Yes. A rigid deck on a load cell at each corner, wired to a junction box and an indicator, makes a barn horse scale. The MNM Scales MS-20k kit includes the load cells, junction box, LP7515 indicator, feet, hardware and cable.
What indicator features help when weighing horses?
A clear display, a Hold key to capture a stable weight while the horse shifts, and an RS-232 port to send weights to a printer or computer.
Where should a horse scale go in the barn?
On a level, solid base such as a concrete pad, with a non-slip mat, a calm approach, and room for the handler beside the deck.
Do you calibrate horse scales?
Yes. Order calibration with a ready-made scale, or book on-site service across Greater Houston for $295 + $2 per mile per visit. Call (832) 290-3120 for a calibration quote on a barn-built platform.
