Balance Table Guide: When Your Lab Balance Needs an Anti-Vibration Table
Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated November 3, 2026 · Prices checked November 3, 2026
Short answer: a balance table is a heavy, stable weighing bench that keeps floor and bench vibration away from a sensitive balance. At 0.1 mg it helps when readings drift or settle slowly; at 0.01 mg and 1 µg it is part of the setup. Our RADWAG SAL/STONE/H anti-vibration table has a stone top on a vibration damper, isolated from its stainless steel frame, with a 1000 x 650 mm surface and 150 kg load capacity, in stock at $2,957.98. This guide is for lab managers, QC teams and pharmacies setting up analytical, semi-micro or microbalances. MNM Scales has sold, calibrated and repaired scales and balances for over 30 years from our shop in Cypress, Texas, and we are one of the largest scale distributors.
Do you need a balance table?
| Balance readability | Typical type | Balance table? |
|---|---|---|
| 0.01 g to 1 mg | Precision balance | A solid, level bench away from doors and vents is usually enough |
| 0.1 mg | Analytical balance | Helpful when readings drift, settle slowly or the bench is shared |
| 0.01 mg | Semi-micro balance | Recommended: vibration and drafts show up directly in the last digit |
| 0.001 mg (1 µg) | Microbalance | Part of the setup, together with a breeze break and a stable room |
How vibration and drafts upset sensitive readings
- Floor vibration from foot traffic, carts, pumps, centrifuges and nearby machines makes the last digits wander and stretches stabilization time.
- Bench vibration comes from typing, writing and leaning on the same bench, or from a shaker or stirrer next to the balance.
- Drafts and temperature changes from HVAC vents, doors and people walking past push on the pan and draft shield and cause slow drift.
- An uneven or flexing bench tips the balance off level, which shifts readings and calibration.
A balance table handles the first two. The draft shield, a breeze break and good placement handle the rest; at microgram resolution you need all of them.
What to look for in a balance table
- Mass: a heavy top resists vibration. The SAL/STONE/H weighs 215 kg net, and that mass is what keeps it stable.
- An isolated weighing surface: on the SAL/STONE/H, the stone top sits on a vibration damper and does not touch the outer frame, so bumps against the table and vibration from the floor are not passed to the balance.
- Surface size and load: 1000 x 650 mm holds several balances side by side, and the table carries up to 150 kg.
- Leveling: adjustable feet with rubber tips let you level the table on an uneven floor.
- Easy-clean materials: an AISI304 stainless steel frame suits clean rooms, pharmaceutical labs and areas that are wiped down often.
Where to put the balance table
- Choose a ground-floor spot or a corner near a load-bearing wall, where floors flex least.
- Keep it away from doors, windows, HVAC supply vents, fume hoods and direct sunlight.
- Keep pumps, centrifuges, shakers and printers on a different bench.
- Level the table with its feet, then level the balance with its own level indicator.
- Let the balance warm up and run its internal calibration after moving it. See the RADWAG AS 220.R2 PLUS manual for setup steps.
Draft shields, breeze breaks and static
Every balance in the table below has a glass draft shield. For microbalances, the A&D AD-1672 tabletop breeze break encloses the whole balance with antistatic panels to block air from HVAC and people passing by; it is sold separately and not included with any balance. For static, the A&D BM-22 has a built-in ionizer.

Rules: USP minimum weight, records and NTEP
In pharmaceutical work, the USP minimum weight is the smallest sample a balance can weigh within the required accuracy where it is installed. It depends on repeatability, so a stable table and room help a balance reach its listed value: 140 mg on the AS 220.R2 PLUS and 24 mg on the AS 82/220.R2 PLUS. Keep calibration certificates and routine check records with the balance. TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. Any balance used to sell or charge by weight has to be NTEP-certified and placed in service; see our NTEP guide and TDA scale certification guide, and call us for legal-for-trade balances.
Calibration and rental
- Balances up to 2.2 kg: in-house calibration with a certificate is $95, or NIST calibration with a NIST-traceable certificate is $395. See NIST vs in-house certificates.
- On-site service: $295 + $2 per mile per visit across the Houston area, with calibration charged per balance; see our balance calibration service and on-site calibration.
- Mail-in, repairs and rentals: ship balances for mail-in calibration, have us repair the brands we sell, and rent all types of scales while yours is out of service.
- After setting up a new table: recalibrate the balance once it is level and warmed up in its new spot.

Frequently asked questions
What is a balance table?
A heavy, stable weighing bench that keeps floor and bench vibration away from a sensitive balance, often with a stone top on a damper isolated from the frame.
Does an analytical balance need a balance table?
At 0.1 mg a table helps when readings drift or settle slowly. At 0.01 mg and 1 µg readability, a balance table is part of the setup.
Is a stone or granite top enough on its own?
Mass helps, but a top that sits on a damper and does not touch the outer frame also keeps bumps against the table from reaching the balance.
How big should a balance table be?
Large enough for the balance plus room to work. The RADWAG SAL/STONE/H has a 1000 x 650 mm surface that holds several balances and carries up to 150 kg.
Where should a balance table go?
On a stable floor near a load-bearing wall, away from doors, HVAC vents, fume hoods, direct sunlight and vibrating equipment.
Should I calibrate my balance after moving it to a new table?
Yes. Level it, let it warm up, run its internal calibration, and check it with test weights. Call (832) 290-3120 for calibration with a certificate.
