How to choose a bench scale

Capacity and readability

Choose a capacity 20–30% above your heaviest load, then check readability, the smallest step the display shows. A 300 lb x 0.02 lb scale suits cartons and totes, while a 15 kg x 0.1 g scale suits formulation and gram-level work. Our guide to scale capacity and readability explains the trade-offs.

Platform size

Your load should sit fully on the platform. Compact pans around 9 x 11 in suit food and parts, 12 x 14 in to 15 x 21 in platforms suit cartons, and 18 x 18 in to 24 x 24 in stainless platforms handle large boxes and totes.

Legal for trade

Bench scale calibration

Add calibration to any bench scale and we calibrate it in our Cypress, TX shop before it ships. Pricing is set by the scale’s maximum capacity:

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

For example, a 2 lb (1 kg) portion scale falls in the up to 2.2 kg tier, a 60 lb (27 kg) bench scale falls in the 6.2–35 kg tier, a 300 lb (136 kg) scale in the 35–150 kg tier, and a 500 lb scale in the over 150 kg tier. Calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after receipt. We also offer mail-in calibration for scales bought anywhere, TDA and NIST, for Texas and states that accept TDA calibration.

MNM Scales is TDA licensed with registered technicians for all scale classes. Our technicians calibrate, repair and certify bench scales on-site across Houston and the surrounding suburbs, with Dallas, Austin and San Antonio on request. On-site service is $295 plus $2 per mile round trip, charged once per visit, with calibration priced per scale. What is a bench scale?

A bench scale is a platform scale sized to sit on a workbench, table or cart, typically from 3 kg up to about 1,000 lb. It sits between small precision balances and floor scales.

Which bench scale is best for shipping?

For packages up to 150 lb, a 150 lb x 0.01 lb scale such as the A&D FG-60KAM works well. For heavier cartons, step up to 300 lb models such as the A&D FG-150KAM. See all shipping bench scales.

Do I need an NTEP bench scale?

You need an NTEP approved scale whenever the weight sets a price, such as selling produce, meat, bulk goods or charging by weight. For internal use such as batching or inventory, any accurate bench scale works.

Can a bench scale connect to my computer?

Yes. Many models include RS-232, USB or Bluetooth output. The A&D SJ-15KWP-BT, for example, sends weights over Bluetooth.

Are bench scales waterproof?
