NTEP Milligram Precision Balance

MNM Scales stocks NTEP milligram balances and laboratory balances from A&D and OHAUS, from 0.001 g toploaders certified for trade to 0.1 mg analytical and 0.01 mg semi-micro lab balances. As one of the largest scale distributors in Texas and an authorized A&D and OHAUS dealer, we ship every balance free from Cypress, TX, and we can calibrate it before it ships, with an in-house or NIST-traceable certificate.

How to choose a milligram balance

  • Readability. A milligram (0.001 g) toploader covers formulation, jewelry and dispensary work. Analytical balances read 0.1 mg, and semi-micro balances read 0.01 mg.
  • NTEP or lab only. If you sell by weight, choose an NTEP model and note its certified division. The A&D Apollo GF-AN and GX-AN models read 0.001 g and are NTEP Class II at e = 0.01 g. Lab-only balances are built for repeatability and data output rather than trade.
  • Internal or external calibration. Internal calibration uses a built-in weight and suits labs with changing temperatures. External calibration costs less and uses a test weight. See internal vs external calibration.
  • Capacity. Size the balance to your largest container plus sample. Our capacity and readability guide walks through the math.

Choosing the right laboratory balance

Pharmacy and compounding

Compounding pharmacies typically weigh small doses to 0.001 g or finer. The GX-203AN adds internal calibration, and the GR-120 reads 0.1 mg. See our best pharmacy balance guide.

Quality control and formulation

For QC benches that weigh both samples and finished packs, a 420 g milligram balance such as the GX-403AN or AX423N/E covers both jobs.

Analytical and semi-micro work

Assays, filter weighing and standards prep need 0.1 mg or 0.01 mg. Compare the classes in analytical vs precision balance and microbalance vs semi-micro vs analytical.

Schools and teaching labs

Teaching labs often choose a 0.001 g external-calibration balance such as the FX-120iN for its price and quick readings.

Calibration and certificates

Every balance on this page can ship calibrated from our Cypress, TX shop. Calibration is priced by maximum capacity:

Scale maximum capacity In-house calibration with NIST-tested weights NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate
Up to 2.2 kg (4.85 lb) $95 $395

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

All of the balances listed above fall in the up to 2.2 kg tier. Calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after we receive the balance, and our mail-in scale calibration service covers balances bought anywhere. Choosing a certificate? Read NIST certificate vs in-house calibration. MNM Scales is TDA licensed with registered technicians for all scale classes, and we handle the RWM-780 and RWM-700 paperwork when a balance is used for trade in Texas.

On-site lab service in Houston

Our technicians calibrate and repair balances on-site across the Houston area and surrounding suburbs, with Dallas, Austin and San Antonio on request. On-site service is $295 plus $2 per mile round trip, charged once per visit, with calibration priced per balance on top. See balance calibration in Houston and NIST calibration certificates.

Milligram balance FAQ

What is an NTEP milligram balance?

A balance that reads 0.001 g and holds an NTEP certificate for trade use, usually at a certified division of 0.01 g. The A&D FX-120iN and GF-203AN are examples.

Is a milligram balance the same as an analytical balance?

They are different classes. A milligram balance reads 0.001 g. An analytical balance reads 0.1 mg (0.0001 g) and uses a draft shield.

Do I need internal calibration?

Internal calibration helps where room temperature changes or audits call for frequent checks. External calibration suits stable rooms and tighter budgets.

How often should a lab balance be calibrated?

Most labs calibrate at least once a year, and more often under audit programs. See how often to calibrate a scale.

Can you provide a NIST-traceable certificate?

Yes. Choose NIST calibration at checkout, or send a balance in through our mail-in service.

How fast is calibration?

Usually 1–3 business days after we receive the balance.

Is shipping free?

Yes. Balances ship free, and we offer UPS 2nd Day and Next Day for faster delivery.
