How to choose a shipping bench scale

Capacity for your heaviest box

Most e-commerce and small-business shippers use a 150 lb scale; warehouses with heavier cartons choose 300 lb or more. UPS and FedEx accept parcels up to 150 lb, so a 150 lb x 0.01 lb or 0.05 lb scale covers most parcel work with fine readability. Our guide to the best shipping scale for small business compares options.

Platform size

Match the platform to your typical carton. An 11.8 x 15 in pan suits most boxes; a 15.4 x 20.9 in or 20 x 20 in platform suits large cartons and totes. Column-mounted displays stay readable when a box overhangs the pan.

Column or low profile

Column displays put the readout at eye level. Low-profile platforms such as the A&D FG-150KBM let packers slide heavy boxes on and off with ease.

Connect to shipping software

Choose a model with USB or RS-232 output to send weights straight into your shipping platform and cut keying errors. Check each product page for the interface and cable details; cables are sold separately where marked “not included”.

Charging by weight

If you charge customers by weight, as a freight counter or pack-and-ship store does, choose an NTEP approved scale such as the A&D FG-150KAMN or Torrey EQB-50/100.

Calibration for shipping scales

Add calibration to any shipping bench scale and we calibrate it at our Cypress shop before it ships. Pricing follows the scale’s maximum capacity:

Scale maximum capacity In-house calibration with NIST-tested weights NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate
6.2–35 kg (13.7–77 lb) $250 $595
35–150 kg (77–330 lb) $350 $750
Over 150 kg (330 lb) $495 $995

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

A 60 lb scale falls in the 6.2–35 kg tier, a 150 lb, 300 lb or 330 lb (150 kg) scale in the 35–150 kg tier, and a 400 lb or larger scale in the over 150 kg tier. Calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after receipt. For scales you already own, use mail-in calibration.

Shipping scale service in Houston

MNM Scales is TDA licensed with registered technicians for all scale classes. We calibrate and repair shipping scales on-site at warehouses and distribution centers across Houston and the surrounding suburbs, including Katy, The Woodlands and Pasadena and Baytown, with Dallas, Austin and San Antonio on request. On-site service is $295 plus $2 per mile round trip, charged once per visit, with calibration priced per scale, so calibrating every station in one visit keeps the cost per scale low. Shipping bench scale FAQ

What is the best shipping bench scale for a warehouse?

For most warehouses, a 300 lb x 0.02 lb platform such as the A&D FG-150KAM or FG-150KAL handles cartons of every size with fine readability. For high-volume parcel stations, the 150 lb A&D FG-60KAM is a fast, precise choice.

What capacity shipping scale do I need?

Choose a capacity above your heaviest package. For parcel service up to 150 lb, a 150 lb scale works; for freight cartons and totes, choose 300 lb to 1,000 lb.

Can a shipping scale connect to my computer?

Yes. Many shipping bench scales offer USB or RS-232 output to send weights into shipping software.

Do I need an NTEP shipping scale?

Choose NTEP when the weight sets a price you charge a customer, such as pack-and-ship counters and freight billing. For weighing your own outbound parcels, any accurate shipping scale works.

How fast do shipping scales arrive?

Shipping is free, and UPS 2nd Day and Next Day are available for faster delivery.

Can you supply scales for every packing station?

Yes. Contact us 24/7 or call (832) 290-3120 for a wholesale quote, and read our tips for buying scales in bulk.
