Washdown Scales

A washdown scale is sealed against water, food residue and cleaning chemicals, so you can clean it right where you work. MNM Scales stocks washdown scales and washdown food scales for meat and poultry plants, seafood processors, commercial kitchens, delis, bakeries, produce packers and chemical plants, from A&D, OHAUS, Brecknell, Adam Equipment, Optima, Doran and our own MNM Scales line, with ratings from IP65 to IP69K. As one of the largest scale distributors in Texas, we own the inventory on our shelves in Cypress, TX, and every washdown scale ships free nationwide. Calibration before shipping is available on request (paid service tiers), and our TDA-Registered Technicians service scales on-site across the Houston area.

What makes a scale washdown ready

Compare three things before you buy:

  • IP rating. IP65 handles spray and wipe-down cleaning. IP67 and IP68 (IPX8) handle immersion-level water, and IP69K handles high-pressure, high-temperature hoses.
  • Food-contact listing. NSF listed models such as the A&D SK-WP and SJ-WP series and the OHAUS Valor 4000 are built for food-contact areas and health inspections.
  • NTEP approval. Choose an NTEP Class III model when you sell or label food by weight.

Our washdown scales guide explains IP ratings and cleaning routines in more detail.

Specifications below come from each maker’s data sheet or NTEP certificate. “In-house use” means the maker does not list NTEP approval, so use it for portioning and checking rather than selling by weight.

How to choose a washdown scale

Match the IP rating to your cleaning

Wipe-down and light spray: IP65. Sinks, soaking and heavy water: IP67 or IP68. High-pressure, hot-water sanitation: IP69K, such as the A&D SW series.

Portioning and recipe prep

For portions up to 44 lb, the A&D SK-WP series is compact, battery powered and NSF listed. The OHAUS Valor 4000 adds front and rear displays and a rechargeable battery.

Checkweighing packs and trays

Comparator lights speed up over/under checks. The A&D SJ-WP, HV-CWP and Brecknell C3236 all support target-weight checking.

Meat, poultry and seafood processing

Heavier cases and daily hose cleaning call for a sealed stainless bench scale such as the OHAUS Defender 3000xw, A&D SE or A&D SW series, or a stainless floor scale for full bins.

Selling or labeling by weight

When the weight sets the price, choose an NTEP model. For printed labels, see our deli scale with label printer guide.

Who uses washdown scales

  • Food manufacturers and distributors: portioning, batching and checkweighing on wet production lines.
  • Grocery stores: meat, seafood, deli and produce departments that clean scales several times a day.
  • Acorn and pecan companies: weighing nuts through washing, sorting and packing.
  • Chemical and plastics plants: sealed stainless scales that stand up to spills and cleaning chemicals.

Calibration for washdown food scales

For any washdown scale, calibration before shipping is available on request (paid service tiers), done in our Cypress, TX shop. Pricing is set by the scale’s maximum capacity:

Scale maximum capacity In-house calibration with NIST-tested weights NIST calibration with NIST-traceable certificate
Up to 2.2 kg (4.85 lb) $95 $395
2.2–6.2 kg (4.85–13.7 lb) $195 $495
6.2–35 kg (13.7–77 lb) $250 $595
35–150 kg (77–330 lb) $350 $750
Over 150 kg (330 lb) $495 $995

A scale whose capacity is exactly at a tier limit uses the lower tier.

An 11 lb SK-5000WP falls in the 2.2–6.2 kg tier, a 30 lb Valor 4000 falls in the 6.2–35 kg tier, and a 150 lb HV-60KCWP falls in the 35–150 kg tier. Calibration usually takes 1–3 business days after we receive the scale. Already own one? Use our mail-in scale calibration service, available for scales bought anywhere.

Washdown food scale FAQ

What IP rating does a washdown food scale need?

IP65 suits daily spray and wipe-down cleaning. Choose IP67 or IP68 for heavy water exposure, and IP69K for high-pressure hot-water hoses.

What does IP69K mean?

IP69K is the highest common washdown rating. It means the scale is dust-tight and protected against close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. The A&D SW series is rated IP69K at 1,450 psi and 175°F.

Are these scales NSF listed?

Many are. The A&D SK-WP and SJ-WP series and the OHAUS Valor 4000 carry NSF approval, as listed on each product page.

Can I use a washdown scale to sell food by weight?

Yes, when the model is NTEP approved. The A&D SK-WP, SJ-WP, HV-CWP, SE and SW series are NTEP, and our TDA-Registered Technicians can place them in service in Texas.

Do washdown scales run on batteries?

Several do. The A&D SK-WP, SJ-WP and SE series run on D batteries, and the OHAUS Valor 4000 and Brecknell C3236 have rechargeable batteries, so you can move them between stations.

Can you calibrate my washdown scale?

Yes. Calibration before shipping is available on request (paid service tiers), usually within 1–3 business days. You can also use our mail-in calibration service, or have our TDA-Registered Technicians calibrate it on-site in the Houston area.

Do you rent washdown scales?

Yes. MNM Scales rents all types of scales. Ask about scale rentals for seasonal runs and short projects.

How do I get a quote?

Call (832) 290-3120 or contact us with the model, quantity and your location, 24/7.
