How to Weigh a Dog at Home or in the Clinic: Small, Large and Wiggly Dogs
Short answer: for a small dog, weigh yourself on a bathroom scale, weigh again holding the dog, and subtract, or use a table-top scale with a basket. For a large dog, use a walk-on platform scale: zero it empty, lead the dog on so all four feet are on the deck, wait for it to settle or press HOLD, and read. Use the same scale at the same time of day and log every result. The MNM Scales Optima OP-922 vet scale has a 20 x 43 inch, 2.6 inch high platform with an anti-slip rubber mat and a HOLD key.
End-of-year sale: $268 on the OP-922 (#43666). Contact us or call (832) 290-3120 with questions.

Knowing your dog’s weight helps you and your veterinarian track growth, diet changes and treatment. The method depends on the size of the dog and how calmly it stands.
Which method fits your dog
| Method | Best for | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step-on and subtract (bathroom scale) | Small and medium dogs you can lift | Uses a scale you already own | Two readings add their errors; coarse steps hide small changes |
| Table-top scale with basket | Puppies, toy breeds and cats | Fine steps; tare the basket | Platform size limits it to small animals |
| Walk-on platform (OP-922) | Medium, large and giant dogs | One direct reading; mat for grip; HOLD key; End-of-year sale: $268 | Needs floor space and a calm approach |
| Clinic or kennel scale | Any dog, during a visit | Calibrated scale, trained staff | Weights at different places can differ slightly |
Method 1: weigh a dog on a bathroom scale
- Put the scale on a hard, level floor, not carpet.
- Weigh yourself and write the number down.
- Pick up the dog securely and weigh again.
- Subtract your weight from the combined weight. The difference is the dog’s weight.
- Repeat once and average the two results if they differ.
This works for dogs you can lift safely. Because two readings are subtracted, small errors add up, so treat it as a trend tool rather than a precise weight.
Method 2: weigh a large dog on a walk-on scale
- Place the platform on a flat, solid floor with the rubber mat on top and the indicator where you can read it.
- Turn it on with nothing on the deck and let it zero. If you weigh with a blanket or crate, place it first and press tare.
- Lead the dog on with a loose leash. Stand beside the platform, not on it.
- Check that all four feet are on the deck and the tail, leash and your hands are not touching the floor, the wall or the dog’s weight.
- Wait for the stable sign, or press HOLD to lock the weight while the dog moves.
- Write down the weight, let the dog step off, and confirm the display returns to zero.
A 20 x 43 inch deck like the OP-922 fits most large and giant breeds standing; it weighs up to 660 lb (300 kg) in steps of 0.2 lb (0.1 kg), and its HOLD key locks the reading of a moving dog. The LP7515 indicator guide covers the hold settings.
Method 3: puppies, toy breeds and cats
Small animals need finer steps than a walk-on platform shows. Use a table-top scale with a tray or basket: tare the empty basket, place the animal in it, and read once it settles. Weigh puppies at the same time each day or week, before a meal, so the trend reflects growth rather than a full stomach.
Getting a steady reading from a wiggly dog
- Use the hold key if your indicator has one. On the OP-922, HOLD locks the weight of a moving dog.
- Give a treat at nose height so the dog stands square and faces forward.
- Practice with the scale switched off: walk on, reward, walk off.
- A rubber mat stops sliding paws, which is often the reason a dog refuses the deck.
- Two people help: one handles the dog, one reads and writes the number.
- For anxious dogs, weigh in a crate (not included) and subtract the crate with the tare key.
Why the number matters
Many veterinary doses are calculated from body weight, and the American Animal Hospital Association’s anesthesia and monitoring guidelines call for an accurate weight on the day of a procedure. At home, a regular weigh-in helps you spot a change early and bring a reliable number to your veterinarian, who decides on any diet or medication change. Ask your veterinarian how often your dog should be weighed.
For clinics, kennels, groomers and breeders
- Weigh at check-in and log the weight with the date, so trends are easy to follow. Our veterinary scales buying guide covers sizing and features.
- Wipe the mat between dogs and wash it at the end of the day.
- Check the scale with a known weight from time to time, and calibrate at least once a year. See how to calibrate a floor scale.
- Weighing goats, sheep or pigs too? See our livestock scale guide for goats, sheep and pigs.
Notes from our Cypress, TX shop
- Read the same scale every time: two different scales can disagree slightly even when both are in tolerance, so compare weights from one scale.
- Test it with something you know: weigh the same item each month, such as a dumbbell or a set of weight plates; if its reading moves, call us or ask about calibration with certified test weights.
- Corners matter on a long deck: a dog standing at one end loads two corners more than the others. At calibration, our TDA-registered technicians test each corner so the reading holds wherever the dog stands.
Selling animals by weight: NTEP and Texas rules
Weighing a dog for its health is a health use; a breeder or farm that prices animals by the pound is selling by weight. The OP-922 is built for weighing animals for health, dosing and growth tracking. It is not NTEP approved, so it is not a legal-for-trade scale. When you sell animals by weight in Texas, use an NTEP approved scale, and contact us for NTEP options. Our guide to NTEP and legal-for-trade scales explains the classes, and the legal-for-trade scale checker helps you match a scale to a use. Scales used in trade also follow NIST Handbook 44.
Texas note: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. See TDA’s scales used in trade guidance (PDF) and our TDA scale certification guide, or call us or TDA to confirm your use.

Frequently asked questions
How can I weigh my dog at home without a dog scale?
Weigh yourself on a bathroom scale, weigh again holding the dog, and subtract your weight from the total. Use a hard, level floor and repeat once to check.
How do I weigh a large dog?
Use a walk-on platform scale long enough for all four feet, such as a 20 x 43 inch vet scale. Zero it empty, lead the dog on, wait for a stable or held reading, and record it.
How do I weigh a dog that will not stand still?
Use the indicator’s hold or animal mode, a rubber mat for grip and a treat at nose height. For anxious dogs, weigh inside a crate and tare the crate first.
Is a bathroom scale accurate enough for a dog?
For a trend on a medium or large dog it can help, but subtracting two readings adds their errors. For small dogs and for clinical weights, use a table-top or vet scale.
How do I weigh a puppy?
Use a table-top scale with a basket: tare the basket, add the puppy, and read once it settles. Weigh at the same time of day, before meals, and log the results.
Why does my dog weigh differently at the vet?
Different scales, a meal, water, a collar or a harness can shift the number. Compare weights from the same scale, at the same time of day, with the same gear.
