Veterinary Scales Buying Guide: How to Choose One for a Clinic, Kennel or Grooming Shop
Short answer: when you compare veterinary scales for dogs, look for a low walk-on platform long enough for the whole animal to stand on, with a capacity comfortably above your heaviest patient, a readability fine enough for the small dogs you see, an indicator that can hold a steady reading while the animal moves, and a non-slip mat that cleans easily. Our MNM Scales Optima OP-922 vet scale is a 660 lb by 0.2 lb, 2.6 inch high, 20 x 43 inch platform with a 430 stainless cover on a powder-coated mild steel frame with an anti-slip rubber mat and a HOLD key.
End-of-year sale: $268 on the OP-922 (#43666). Contact us or call (832) 290-3120 with questions.

Veterinary scales range from table-top units for cats to walk-on platforms for large dogs. A walk-on vet scale is a floor-standing platform scale built for animals: low enough that a dog will step on, long enough for four feet, topped with a mat for grip, and paired with an indicator that can sit on a desk or a wall out of reach. This guide covers what to compare before you buy one for a clinic, kennel, grooming shop or breeding program.
Vet scale vs floor scale: what is different
Both use load cells under a steel deck and a separate indicator. A pallet floor scale is built for forklifts and heavy loads, so it sits higher and usually needs a ramp. A vet scale trades that heavy-duty frame for a low, portable platform, a mat that keeps paws from sliding, and indicator features for live loads, such as a hold or averaging mode. If you need to weigh pallets, drums or carts, see our floor scale buying guide.
Choosing a vet scale by patient size
| Patients | Scale style | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Cats, puppies, small dogs and exotics | Table-top or pediatric-style scale with a tray or basket | Fine readability and a tare key for the basket or towel |
| Medium to large dogs | Walk-on vet platform, such as 20 x 43 inches | Low platform, rubber mat, hold or averaging mode |
| Giant breeds, two dogs at once, goats, sheep and show pigs | Long walk-on platform, with panels or a crate when needed | Capacity above the heaviest animal plus any crate |
| Cattle and horses | Livestock scale kit under a squeeze chute or a heavy platform | Load bars or load cells rated for the herd |
The OP-922 at a glance

Capacity and readability: how to size a vet scale
- Capacity: pick a scale rated well above your heaviest patient. If you weigh an animal inside a crate or with a handler holding the lead, add that weight too. The OP-922’s capacity is 660 lb (300 kg).
- Readability: the graduation is the smallest step the display shows. A coarse step is fine for a large dog but hides real change in a small one, so clinics that see many small patients often keep a fine table-top scale beside the walk-on platform. The OP-922 reads in steps of 0.2 lb / 0.1 kg (1/3000).
- Platform length: all four feet must be on the deck, with nothing touching the floor or the wall. A 43 inch long platform fits most large dogs standing.
- Height: a low platform means fewer refusals. A dog that has to step up onto a tall deck tends to brace or back off. The OP-922 stands 65 mm (2.6 in) high.
Why accurate weights matter in a clinic
Many veterinary drug and fluid doses are worked out per unit of body weight, so the weight on the chart flows into the treatment plan. The American Animal Hospital Association’s anesthesia and monitoring guidelines call for an accurate patient weight on the day of anesthesia, and its fluid therapy guidelines suggest weighing patients regularly during fluid therapy so a gain shows up early. Doses and treatment decisions belong to your veterinarian; the scale’s job is to give them a weight they can trust, which is why regular calibration matters.
Features that make weighing animals easier
- Hold or animal mode: the indicator averages a moving load and freezes the result, so a fidgeting dog still gives one clear number. On the OP-922, the HOLD key on the LP7515 indicator locks the weight of a moving animal; see the LP7515 guide for its settings.
- Tare: zero out a towel, blanket, crate or carrier before the animal goes on.
- Rubber mat: grip under paws, a quieter deck, and a surface you can lift out and wash. The OP-922 includes an anti-slip rubber mat.
- Units: switch between lb and kg with the UNIT key to match your records.
- Power: the OP-922 runs on a DC 6 V adapter or on batteries, so it works away from an outlet.
- Remote indicator: a desk or wall-mounted display stays clean and out of reach of paws and tails.
- Accessories (not included): ramps, side panels and crates for animals that will not stand still on an open deck.
Cleaning the platform and mat
- Clear the scale and switch the indicator off.
- Lift the rubber mat, wash it with warm water and a mild detergent, then use your clinic’s disinfectant for the contact time on its label.
- Wipe the steel deck with a damp cloth and the same disinfectant; keep liquid away from the indicator, the cable connector and the load cell openings.
- Dry the stainless cover and the frame fully before the mat goes back, so moisture does not sit under it.
- Turn the indicator on, let it zero with the platform empty, and check one known weight now and then.
Animal shelters, rescues and boarding kennels
Shelters, rescues and boarding kennels weigh many dogs a day, often dogs that have never stood on a scale. A walk-on platform at floor level, a mat that washes between animals and a HOLD key do most of the work. Weigh every dog at intake and again at regular checks, so staff and your veterinarian see a gain or loss early. Place the scale where dogs already walk, such as the intake hallway, so it becomes part of the route, not a separate stop. For large dogs, the 43 inch length of the OP-922 lets most stand with all four feet on the deck; for very small dogs, cats and puppies, add a table-top scale with finer steps.
Between patients, the same platform weighs feed sacks, supply cartons and equipment; our 500 lb scale guide covers those loads, and our guide to a shipping scale for large packages helps if you ship or receive big boxes.
What 0.2 lb steps mean for your patients
| Patient weight | One 0.2 lb step is | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 10 lb dog | 2 percent of body weight | Good for trends; use a finer table-top scale for clinical weights |
| 40 lb dog | 0.5 percent of body weight | Clear week-to-week trend |
| 90 lb dog | about 0.2 percent of body weight | Fine detail for large and giant breeds |
| 150 lb goat or show pig | about 0.13 percent of body weight | Fine detail for growth tracking |
Notes from our Cypress, TX shop
- Check the corners: a dog that stands off center loads one corner more than the others. Ask for a corner (shift) test at calibration; our TDA-registered technicians place test weights at each corner and the center so a dog reads the same wherever it stands.
- Protect the cable: a chewed or pinched indicator cable is a frequent cause of platform repairs. Route it behind the desk and away from kennel doors.
- Dry under the mat: water left under a rubber mat after cleaning shortens the life of any platform; lift the mat and let the deck dry.
- Mail it in or drop it off: the OP-922 weighs about 40 lb, so clinics often bring it to our Cypress shop by appointment or ship it with the mail-in calibration service.
Selling animals by weight: NTEP and Texas rules
Weighing a patient to plan care is a health use. The OP-922 is built for weighing animals for health, dosing and growth tracking. It is not NTEP approved, so it is not a legal-for-trade scale. When you sell animals by weight in Texas, use an NTEP approved scale, and contact us for NTEP options. Our guide to NTEP and legal-for-trade scales explains the classes, and the legal-for-trade scale checker helps you match a scale to a use. Scales used in trade also follow NIST Handbook 44.
Texas note: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. See TDA’s scales used in trade guidance (PDF) and our TDA scale certification guide, or call us or TDA to confirm your use.

Frequently asked questions
What are veterinary scales?
Veterinary scales weigh animals: table-top models for cats and small dogs, and low walk-on vet scales for larger animals, usually with a non-slip mat, a remote indicator and a hold key that locks the reading while the animal moves.
What size veterinary scale do I need for a large dog?
Choose a platform long enough for all four feet, such as 20 x 43 inches, and a capacity well above your heaviest dog plus any crate or blanket you weigh with it.
Can I use a floor scale as a veterinary scale?
Yes, if the animal can step on calmly and the readability suits your patients. Pallet floor scales sit higher and lack a mat, so a low vet platform with a mat is easier on the animals.
How accurate do veterinary scales need to be?
Fine enough to show real change in your smallest patients. Many clinics pair a walk-on platform for large dogs with a table-top scale with finer steps for cats, puppies and small dogs.
How do you clean a vet scale mat?
Lift the mat, wash it with warm water and mild detergent, apply your disinfectant for its label contact time, rinse if the label says so, and dry the steel deck before the mat goes back.
How often should veterinary scales be calibrated?
We suggest at least once a year, and again after the scale is moved, dropped or repaired. We offer in-house, NIST, mail-in and on-site calibration with certificates.
