500 lb Scale Guide: Heavy Duty Platform Scales for Kegs, Feed Sacks, Boxes and Gear
Short answer: a 500 lb scale is right when your heaviest load, plus any cart or container, stays below about 500 lb with room to spare. If loads come close to 500 lb, step up to a higher capacity so the scale is not working at its limit. The MNM Scales Optima OP-922 weighs up to 660 lb in 0.2 lb steps on a 20 x 43 inch, 2.6 inch high platform, and suits kegs, feed sacks, large boxes, coolers and equipment as well as animals.
End-of-year sale: $268 on the OP-922 (#43666). Contact us or call (832) 290-3120 with questions.

Searches for a 500 lb scale usually come from people who have outgrown a bathroom or bench scale: a brewery checking kegs, a ranch weighing feed, a shop weighing heavy parts, or a clinic weighing large dogs. This guide explains how to size capacity and platform, what a 660 lb platform handles, and when you need a different scale.
How to size a heavy duty scale
- Capacity: add your heaviest item, the cart, dolly, tub or crate it sits in, and a margin. A load that regularly sits at the top of the range wears a scale harder than one in the middle.
- Readability: the graduation is the smallest step the display shows. The OP-922 reads in steps of 0.2 lb / 0.1 kg (1/3000); see scale capacity and readability for how the two relate.
- Platform size: the whole load must sit on the deck, with nothing touching the floor or a wall. Measure your largest item, then add room for a cart or tray.
- Height: a low deck saves your back. Kegs, sacks and boxes slide or tip onto a 2.6 inch platform without a ramp.
- Indicator: look for zero, units and a hold key. The OP-922’s LP7515 LCD indicator has ON/OFF, ZERO, UNIT and HOLD keys; see the LP7515 indicator guide for its settings.
500 lb or 660 lb: which capacity?
A 660 lb platform scale gives you the same footprint as many 500 lb scales with extra headroom, which matters once you add a hand truck, cart or crate.
A scale rated at 500 lb is a fine fit when your loads stay well below it. Many heavy jobs land near that number once a hand truck or a container is added, and that is where a 660 lb capacity helps: a stack of ten 50 lb feed sacks is 500 lb, and a hand truck on top of that would push a 500 lb scale past its rating, while the OP-922 still has room. For loads above 660 lb, or full pallets, use a pallet floor scale; our floor scale buying guide covers sizes up to 10,000 lb.

Weighing kegs
A keg scale for a brewery, bar or event only needs to hold one keg at a time; a flat platform the keg stands on gives you full and empty keg weights in seconds.
A scale tells you how much is left in a keg without tapping or tilting it. Weigh the empty keg once and write the weight on it, then weigh it full when it arrives and again during service. The full weight minus the empty weight is the product left. Bars, breweries and event teams use this for inventory and for planning the next order. Set the keg upright in the middle of the deck and keep hoses and couplers off the scale while you read.
Weighing feed sacks and farm supplies
A feed sack scale lets you check deliveries and mix rations by weight. Stand the sack on the deck, or weigh several on a tared hand truck.
On a ranch or farm, a platform scale checks feed rations, mineral and seed by the sack or by the batch. Tare a tub or a pallet board, add the feed, and record the weight for your feeding log. Weighing the animals too? Our livestock scale guide for goats, sheep and pigs covers crates, panels and the hold key, and our TDA-registered technicians service farms, ranches and fish farms around Waller, Hockley and Magnolia.
Hay bales
A hay bale scale tells you what each cutting really weighs. Small square bales fit on a 20 x 43 inch deck on their side, so you can weigh a sample of bales from each cutting and work out feed by weight rather than by bale count. Large round and big square bales are wider and heavier than this platform; weigh those on a larger floor scale or with a loader scale.
Weighing boxes, gear and equipment
Workshops, storage rooms and field crews use a heavy platform for parts, tool chests, generators and coolers. Zero a cart or dolly (not included) first, roll the load on, and press HOLD so the reading stays on the display after you roll it off. Keep a known weight nearby to check the scale now and then.
Why a low-profile platform helps
A low profile floor scale keeps the deck close to the floor so loads slide or roll on without a ramp. At 65 mm (2.6 in), the OP-922 lets you tip a keg, walk a sack on with a hand truck, or lead an animal on without lifting. Higher industrial floor scales usually need a ramp or a pit, which adds cost and floor space.
Capacity budget: worked examples
| Load | Plus | Total | Room left on a 660 lb scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ten 50 lb feed sacks (500 lb) | Hand truck about 40 lb | about 540 lb | about 120 lb |
| Two full kegs weighed together | Nothing | check your keg’s label | Weigh one at a time if close to 660 lb |
| Tool chest 350 lb | Rolling cart about 60 lb | about 410 lb | about 250 lb |
Notes from our Cypress, TX shop
- Keep a margin: a scale that spends its day near full capacity needs calibration checks more often than one working in the middle of its range.
- Drop loads gently: dropping a sack or a keg onto the deck shocks the load cells; set it down.
- Label your tare items: write the weight of each cart, tub and pallet board on it so anyone can check the zero.
- Calibrate where you use it: our TDA-registered technicians calibrate on-site with their own test weights, or at our Cypress shop by appointment.
How to get an accurate reading
- Set the platform on a flat, solid floor and keep all four corners clear of walls, pallets and cords.
- Turn the LP7515 indicator on with nothing on the deck and let it zero.
- If you weigh the load on a cart, dolly or tray, put it on first and press ZERO so it reads zero.
- Place the load in the middle of the deck so nothing hangs over an edge or touches the floor.
- Wait for the reading to settle, or press HOLD to lock it, then write it down.
- Clear the deck and check that the display returns to zero before the next load.
Selling by weight
Weighing your own kegs, feed and gear for records and planning is an in-house use; selling product or charging a customer by the pound is a sale by weight. The OP-922 is built for in-house weighing, and it is sold as a vet scale for weighing animals for health and growth tracking. It is not NTEP approved, so it is not a legal-for-trade scale. When the weight sets a price or a charge in Texas, use an NTEP approved scale, and contact us for NTEP options. Our guide to NTEP and legal-for-trade scales explains the classes, and the legal-for-trade scale checker helps you match a scale to a use. Scales used in trade also follow NIST Handbook 44.
Texas note: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. See TDA’s scales used in trade guidance (PDF) and our TDA scale certification guide, or call us or TDA to confirm your use.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best scale for 500 lb?
A platform scale rated above your heaviest load plus any cart, with a deck big enough for the whole item. A 660 lb by 0.2 lb, 20 x 43 inch platform leaves room above 500 lb.
Can I weigh a keg on a platform scale?
Yes. Stand the keg upright in the middle of the deck. Weigh it empty once, then subtract that from later weights to see how much product is left.
Will a 55 gallon drum fit on a 20 x 43 inch scale?
A 55 gallon drum is wider than a 20 inch deck, so it would overhang. Use a drum scale or a larger floor scale for drums.
How do I weigh something too heavy for a bathroom scale?
Use a heavy duty platform scale. Zero it empty or with your cart on it, set the load in the middle of the deck, and read once it settles or press HOLD.
Is a 660 lb scale better than a 500 lb scale?
It gives more room above 500 lb for heavy loads plus carts or containers. Choose capacity by your heaviest real load with a margin, and the platform by its size.
Can I sell products by weight with this scale?
Selling by weight calls for an NTEP approved, legal-for-trade scale, and the OP-922 is built for in-house weighing. Contact us for NTEP options; in Texas we can check your use.
