Chemical Weighing Scale: Best Scales for Chemical Plants and Labs
Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated October 31, 2026 · Prices checked October 31, 2026
Short answer: the best chemical weighing scale depends on where it sits. Inside a classified area with flammable gases or vapors, use an intrinsically safe scale: the A&D EK-3000AEP ($1,089, 3000 g x 0.1 g) for small batches, or the A&D HW-100KCEP ($2,099, 200 lb x 0.02 lb) for pails and bags. In the QC lab, the A&D GX-324AE analytical balance ($2,698, 0.1 mg) has a built-in ionizer for static-prone powders. For wet, washed-down plant floors, the IP68 A&D SC-150KAM ($879) is all stainless and NTEP approved.
A chemical weighing scale has three jobs: weigh accurately, survive the chemicals and cleaning around it, and be safe in the area where it is used. MNM Scales has supplied, calibrated and repaired scales for over 30 years, and from our Cypress, Texas shop we support chemical plants, labs and process industries along the Houston Ship Channel and across Texas. This guide sorts the choices by where the scale will sit: hazardous areas, the lab bench and the plant floor. It also covers the rules, calibration and rentals. In older catalogs a lab balance is often called a chemical balance; today that means an analytical or precision balance.

Intrinsically safe scales for hazardous areas
An intrinsically safe scale limits the electrical and thermal energy in its circuits so it cannot ignite the gas or vapor around it. Your plant’s area classification decides whether you need one. The approval on the scale label has to cover your area’s class and division (or zone), gas group and temperature code. Both A&D series below run on batteries, so there is no power cord or safety barrier to install in the hazardous area.
A&D EK-AEP compact balances: 300 g to 12 kg
The EK-300AEP ($1,015, 300 g x 0.01 g), EK-3000AEP ($1,089, 3000 g x 0.1 g) and EK-12KAEP ($1,349, 12 kg x 1 g) weigh pigments, catalysts, additives and samples right where they are mixed. A&D lists these markings:
- FM/FMc: Intrinsically Safe Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D, T3C, and Class I, Zone 0, AEx/Ex ia op is IIB T3
- IECEx and ATEX: Ex ia op is IIB T3 Ga (ATEX II 1G), ambient -25 to +40 °C
- Power: four AA alkaline batteries of the brands approved in the manual (not included), about 250 hours with the backlight off
- Pan: A&D describes it as a hygienic and chemically resistant stainless steel (SUS304) pan: Ø110 mm on the 300 g model, 133 x 170 mm on the 3000 g and 12 kg models
- Functions: counting with ACAI, percent weighing, HI/OK/LO comparator, specific gravity unit
- Data: optical output through the A&D AD-1611 optical adapter and optical fiber cable (both sold separately, not included). The adapter stays in the safe area, so only light crosses into the hazardous area.

A&D HW-CEP bench scales: 150 to 500 lb
For pails, bags and small drums, the HW-60KCEP ($1,864, 150 lb x 0.01 lb, 13.0 x 16.7 in platform), HW-100KCEP ($2,099, 200 lb x 0.02 lb) and HW-200KCEP ($1,998, 500 lb x 0.05 lb) share a 15.4 x 20.9 in platform on the two larger models. A&D lists:
- FM: Intrinsically Safe Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D, T4, and Class I, Zone 0, AEx ia IIB T4; IECEx and ATEX approvals; ambient -25 to +40 °C
- Power: four D-size alkaline batteries (not included), about 1,500 hours with the backlight and LEDs off or 1,000 hours with them on
- Build: IP65 platform, column-mounted indicator with 25 mm backlit LCD
- Checkweighing: a 3-color, 5-step LED comparator shows under, OK and over at a glance when filling to a target, plus counting and accumulation

Reading the hazardous-area markings
- Class I covers flammable gases and vapors. Division 1 means they can be present in normal operation; Zone 0 means they are present continuously or for long periods.
- Groups C and D cover many common plant chemicals; in the zone system the matching marking is IIB, which also covers IIA gases. Group D includes gases and vapors such as acetone, gasoline, hexane, methanol, propane and toluene; Group C includes ethylene and diethyl ether. Your area classification drawing names the group for each area.
- Temperature code is the highest surface temperature the scale can reach: T3 is 200 °C and T4 is 135 °C. It has to be below the ignition temperature of your chemicals.
- Not sure what your area needs? Send us your area classification and the chemicals involved, and we will match a model.
Lab balances for chemical analysis
For QC and R&D work, readability and repeatability matter most. See analytical vs precision balances and microbalance vs semi-micro vs analytical if you are deciding how fine you need to go.
- A&D GX-324AE ($2,698): 320 g x 0.1 mg analytical balance with internal calibration and a fanless ionizer built into the breeze break. A&D notes that below about 45 percent relative humidity, powders and plastic containers pick up static that can throw readings off by several milligrams. The ionizer clears it before you weigh, and a touchless IR switch starts it. A&D lists a typical minimum weight of 120 mg and RS-232C and USB ports (USB cable included). Source: A&D Apollo GX-A/GX-AE datasheet (PDF).
- A&D GX-6002A ($1,829): 6200 g x 0.01 g precision balance with automatic internal calibration on temperature change and time interval, for formulation and batch checks. USB and RS-232C come standard for batch records.
- A&D GX-6002AWP ($2,403): the IP65 version of the GX-6002A, dust-tight and protected against water jets, with a 165 x 165 mm SUS316 stainless pan. A good fit for wet benches and spill-prone areas.
- A&D FX-200iN ($649): 220 g x 0.001 g with an NTEP Class II certificate (CC 08-045, e = 0.01 g). Choose it when small quantities are sold or charged by weight. External calibration uses a 200 g or 100 g weight (not included).
Lab tips: keep balances out of direct fume hood airflow or use the breeze break, let samples reach room temperature, and use a clean, dry weighing vessel. Plant floor, washdown and drum scales
- A&D SC-150KAM ($879): 330 lb x 0.05 lb, NTEP approved, IP68 with a stainless steel (SUS304) base, column and pan. A&D rates the SC/SE series to stay sealed when submerged 1 m for 24 hours. It runs on six D batteries (not included), so there is no cord near hoses. Source: A&D SC/SE series page.
- A&D SE-60KAM ($739): 130 lb x 0.02 lb, NTEP Class III (CC 11-048), IP68, with a SUS430 stainless pan, a waterproof and corrosion-resistant load cell and a 39 mm display. The IP68 rating applies without the USB or RS-232C interface boards fitted.
- Brecknell DS1000-LCD ($675): 1,000 lb x 0.5 lb drum scale with a 31.5 x 31.5 in powder coated steel deck only 1.8 in high, built-in ramps, and a backlit LCD that runs on its AC adapter (included) or six AA batteries. It is built for in-plant weighing and is not NTEP approved; to sell drums by weight, ask us for an NTEP Class III floor scale. See our floor scale buying guide.
More options and IP ratings are explained in our washdown scales guide and the washdown scales category. Wipe chemical spills off pans and platforms promptly, and confirm your chemicals are compatible with stainless steel.

Rules: when a chemical scale must be legal for trade
Weighing raw materials for your own batches, QC and inventory is process weighing. Once a price, invoice or shipping charge depends on the weight, the scale is used in trade and must meet NIST Handbook 44. TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. TDA explains this in Legal for Trade Scales in the State of Texas (PDF).
- For selling by weight, choose an NTEP model such as the SC-150KAM, SE-60KAM or FX-200iN, or browse NTEP bench scales. Learn more in what NTEP legal for trade means.
- In Texas, our TDA-registered technicians can calibrate and place a commercial scale in service. See legal-for-trade calibration in Texas and our TDA scale certification guide.
- Not sure about your scale? Try the free Texas legal-for-trade scale checker, or check how far a reading may drift with the scale tolerance calculator.
Calibration for chemical plant and lab scales
Quality systems and audits usually ask for calibration on a set schedule with a certificate. Every scale above can ship calibrated; the tier depends on maximum capacity. See what scale calibration costs, how often to calibrate and NIST certificate vs in-house.

Frequently asked questions
What is a chemical weighing scale?
It is any scale or balance used to weigh chemicals: analytical and precision balances in the lab, intrinsically safe scales in classified areas, and washdown bench or drum scales on the plant floor. Pick by location first, then capacity and readability.
Do I need an intrinsically safe scale in a chemical plant?
You need one when the weighing spot is in a classified hazardous area where flammable gases or vapors can be present, such as Class I, Division 1 or Zone 0 or 1. Your area classification decides. The A&D EK-AEP balances and HW-CEP bench scales carry FM, IECEx and ATEX intrinsically safe approvals for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D.
What do Groups C and D and T3 or T4 mean on a scale label?
Groups C and D are gas groups. Group D includes vapors such as acetone, gasoline, hexane, methanol and toluene, and Group C includes ethylene. The T code is the highest surface temperature: T3 is 200 °C and T4 is 135 °C. It must be below the ignition temperature of your chemicals.
Which balance is best for weighing chemicals in a lab?
For 0.1 mg work, the A&D GX-324AE ($2,698) has internal calibration and a built-in ionizer for static-prone powders. For 0.01 g formulation up to 6200 g, choose the GX-6002A ($1,829), or the IP65 GX-6002AWP ($2,403) for wet benches.
Is a stainless steel pan resistant to chemicals?
A&D describes the EK-AEP pan as chemically resistant SUS304 stainless steel, and the GX-AWP balances use a SUS316 pan. Wipe spills promptly and confirm your chemical is compatible with stainless steel.
Does a chemical scale need to be NTEP approved?
It depends on use. Weighing for your own process is not trade, but a scale used to price, invoice or sell by weight must meet NIST Handbook 44. TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours.
Can MNM Scales calibrate scales at our plant?
Yes. On-site service is $295 + $2 per mile per visit across the Houston area, with calibration charged per scale, and we also offer in-house and mail-in calibration with certificates. MNM rents all types of scales if you need one while yours is serviced.
