Tournament Fish Scale: Rent or Buy a Certified, Waterproof Weigh-In Scale
Reviewed by MNM Scales technicians · Updated October 31, 2026 · Prices checked October 31, 2026
Short answer: for the official weigh-in, use an NTEP legal-for-trade waterproof bench scale with a current calibration certificate. At MNM Scales that starts at $539 for the OHAUS Valor 4000 V41XWE15T (30 lb x 0.005 lb, IPX8), with 330 lb models from $879. For boat checks and practice days, Brecknell ElectroSamson fishing scales start at $90.99 (on sale). Running one event a year? Rent the weigh-in scale; MNM rents all types of scales. Prices are live store prices checked October 31, 2026.
A tournament weigh-in is judged in hundredths of a pound in front of anglers, sponsors and sometimes a camera. The tournament fish scale has to read the same for the first bag and the last, survive water and fish slime, and back up the result with paperwork if a weight is questioned. MNM Scales has sold, calibrated, rented and repaired scales for over 30 years from our shop in Cypress, Texas. This guide covers whether to rent or buy, what makes a weigh-in scale certified and legal for trade, and which in-stock scales fit each kind of event.
Rent or buy a tournament fish scale?
| Your situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two events a year | Rent | The scale arrives calibrated for your date, and you skip storage and annual calibration. |
| A season of events or a weekly series | Buy | One scale, one routine, and the same scale your anglers see at every weigh-in. |
| Big offshore fish over 330 lb | Rent a crane scale | A hanging crane scale lifts the fish from a gantry or hoist. |
| A club, marina or bait shop that hosts events | Buy | The scale also weighs ice, bait or product between tournaments. |
| Want to try a scale before buying | Rent first | Run an event with it, then choose the model to buy. |
To rent, request a quote or call (832) 290-3120 with the date, location and fish species. For heavy fish, see crane scale rental in Houston. We can include a calibration certificate with a rental; ask when you request the quote.
What makes a weigh-in scale certified and legal for trade
When tournament rules call for a certified scale, ask the director what they need. It usually comes down to two things, and we can supply both:
- An NTEP legal-for-trade model. NTEP approval shows the model passed national type evaluation for accuracy. See what NTEP legal-for-trade means or check a model with our legal-for-trade scale checker.
- A current calibration certificate. We test the scale with certified weights and document the results before the event. See NIST vs in-house certificates and our NIST calibration certificate service.
Selling by weight in Texas: TDA does not require an NTEP certificate for every device, but the scale must meet NIST Handbook 44 and suit its use; some scales do need one, so we recommend NTEP models and can check yours. TDA explains this in Legal for Trade Scales in the State of Texas (PDF). If the scale will also weigh fish or product for sale, see TDA scale certification in Texas and our legal-for-trade calibration in Texas.

These NTEP Class III washdown bench scales are built for wet areas and hose-down cleaning, so they handle live-well water, ice and slime at the weigh-in table.
| Scale | Capacity x readability | Water protection | Platform | Power | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OHAUS Valor 4000 V41XWE15T | 30 lb x 0.005 lb (NTEP e = 0.01 lb) | IPX8 | 7.5 x 9.5 in | Rechargeable battery (up to 50 h) + AC adapter, both included | $539 |
| A&D SW-15KSF | 33 lb x 0.005 lb | IP69K (1450 psi, 175 °F) | 9.8 x 9.8 in | AC; HC-06i battery sold separately (not included) | $1,398 |
| A&D SC-150KAM | 330 lb x 0.05 lb | IP68 | 11.8 x 15 in | 6 D batteries, about 4,500 h (batteries not included) | $879 |
| A&D SW-150KM | 330 lb x 0.05 lb | IP69K (1450 psi, 175 °F) | 11.8 x 15.0 in | AC; battery sold separately (not included) | $1,299 |
- Bass and freshwater bag weights: the Valor 4000 or SW-15KSF read in 0.005 lb steps up to 30 lb or 33 lb. Weigh the bag or basket, then use tare so only the fish count.
- Redfish, catfish and saltwater fish to 330 lb: the SC-150KAM runs on batteries with no cord near the water; the SW-150KM takes high-pressure cleaning on AC power.
- Remote ramps and docks: pick a battery model, the Valor 4000 or SC-150KAM, and bring spare batteries (not included with the SC-150KAM).

Brecknell fishing scales for boats and practice
Anglers use a hand-held fishing scale on the boat to cull fish and estimate a bag before the weigh-in. The Brecknell ElectroSamson series fits that job:
| Brecknell scale | Capacity x readability | Price |
|---|---|---|
| ElectroSamson 22 lb | 22 lb x 0.02 lb | $90.99 (on sale) |
| ElectroSamson 55 lb | 55 lb x 0.05 lb | $104.99 |
| ElectroSamson 99 lb | 99 lb x 0.1 lb | $108.95 |
Each has a Hold key that freezes the reading while a fish moves, memory tare for a net or bag (kept through power off), lb, lb:oz and kg units, an S hook, a metal weighing bar, a padded belt-clip pouch and a 9V battery in the box, with a one-year Brecknell warranty. For the official weigh-in, use one of the NTEP bench scales above. See all Brecknell scales and hanging scales.
Calibration before the weigh-in
- Scales from 6.2 to 35 kg (Valor 4000, SW-15KSF, ElectroSamson 22 lb and 55 lb): in-house calibration with a certificate $250 or NIST calibration with a NIST-traceable certificate $595.
- Scales from 35 to 150 kg (SC-150KAM, SW-150KM, ElectroSamson 99 lb): see in-house calibration for scales 35 to 150 kg and NIST calibration for scales 35 to 150 kg for current pricing.
- At your venue: on-site calibration across the Houston area is $295 + $2 per mile per visit; see on-site calibration in Houston. Outside Houston, use mail-in calibration.
- Before every event: check the scale with a known test weight and keep the result with the certificate. See how often to calibrate a scale and calibration weight classes.
Weigh-in day checklist
- Set the scale on a level, solid table out of the wind, and let it warm up before the first bag.
- Zero the empty scale, then weigh the bag or basket and use tare.
- Weigh a test weight in front of the officials and write down the reading.
- Keep the calibration certificate at the table.
- Wipe or rinse the platform between flights, following the scale’s water rating.
- Record each weight as displayed; if a reading is questioned, re-zero and weigh again.
