Scale Calibration & Repair in Friendswood, TX

Scale calibration and repair in Friendswood, TX for the clinics, pharmacies, engineering labs, schools and congregations of this quiet city between Houston and Galveston. Our TDA-registered technicians calibrate balances and scales on-site, repair what is failing, and document every instrument with an in-house or NIST-traceable certificate. For one or two instruments, mail-in calibration is often the simplest choice.

A Quaker Colony of Figs and Oranges

Friendswood was founded in 1895 by Frank J. Brown and Thomas H. Lewis as a Quaker colony, and its name still reflects the Society of Friends. Early families grew figs, Satsuma oranges and rice, and fig preserving was a local industry until the last fig plant closed in 1968. The city incorporated in 1960, just as the space program was arriving in nearby Clear Lake.

That timing shaped modern Friendswood. With Johnson Space Center about ten miles east, the city became home to engineers, scientists and the small engineering and testing firms that support them. Its economy today is clinics, pharmacies, dental and medical offices along FM 518, strong public schools, and a long tradition of churches and food pantries that weigh donated groceries before they reach families.

Engineering and test labs weigh samples to 0.01 mg on semi-micro balances like the A&D BA-225TE, which need a draft-free bench and careful calibration. Classrooms use compact scales such as the A&D HT-120. Our guide to micro and semi-micro balances explains readability and setup.

Balance and Scale Repairs

  • Semi-micro balances that will not settle, often from drafts, static or a bench that flexes. We check the setup first, then the balance.
  • Internal calibration errors on lab balances; see internal versus external calibration.
  • Physician scales that read differently between exam rooms, leveled, repaired and recalibrated.
  • Classroom balances with broken pans, dead batteries or cracked displays after a school year.
  • Pantry floor scales with cut cables or a failed load cell.

Small instruments can be repaired in our Cypress shop and shipped back. Repairs are quoted per job.

Certificates, Lab Records and Counters

Engineering and aerospace test labs, and many pharmacies, want a NIST-traceable certificate with as-found and as-left data. Clinics usually keep in-house certificates. Any counter scale that sells by weight must meet NIST Handbook 44 and be suitable for its use, usually an NTEP-approved model, and be placed into service by a registered technician of a TDA-licensed service company; see legal-for-trade calibration.

Labs often calibrate every six or twelve months; schools before the fall semester; clinics yearly. On-site calibration is done during the visit, and mail-in instruments are usually ready within 1 to 3 business days after they arrive.

An on-site visit is the $295 call plus $2 per mile, round trip, charged once per visit, with each instrument priced by capacity, so it makes most sense when several scales or balances are at one site. For one or two balances, mail-in calibration avoids the trip. For floor scales, our technicians bring their own certified test weights.
